National League Game Summary - New York at Pittsburgh

(Thursday, June 26)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 5, New York 2

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gregory Polanco drove in a career-high four runs and Vance Worley tossed seven effective innings in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 5-2 victory over the New York Mets at PNC Park.

Polanco belted his second major league homer as part of a 2-for-3 night to lead Pittsburgh offensively, while Worley (2-0) scattered seven hits and a pair of walks to hold the Mets to one run and help the surging Pirates to their fifth win in six games.

"For me it was just keeping the ball down in the zone and out of the middle," said Worley. "Going back and forth with offspeed and fastballs. Just keep them guessing."

Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-2) served up Polanco's three-run blast and was tagged for five runs overall while issuing four walks over six innings of work.

Lucas Duda had a solo homer for New York and David Wright added an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

"We didn't have a ton of opportunities today to do much," said Mets manager Terry Collins.

Though they were able to manufacture a run in the third inning, the Pirates didn't record their first hit off Matsuzaka until Andrew McCutchen doubled to open the bottom of the fourth with the game tied at 1-1. The reigning NL MVP later took third on a groundout and scored as Ike Davis, caught in a rundown after being picked off first, was able to hold off being tagged out long enough to enable McCutchen to cross the plate.

Pittsburgh put up three hits, though, during a game-breaking fifth inning which was highlighted by Polanco's towering shot deep into the right-field seats with a pair of runners aboard that increased Pittsburgh's lead to 5-1.

That was more than enough for Worley, who was reached for three hits during a shaky second inning but was bailed out when Josh Harrison made a perfect one- hop throw from left field to nab Bobby Abreu at the plate on a Ruben Tejada single.

The Pirates then took advantage of Matsuzaka's leadoff walk to Jordy Mercer to move ahead in the third. A sacrifice by Worley and a wild pitch placed Mercer on third with one out, with Polanco knocking in his first run of the night with a grounder to second.

Worley served up Duda's opposite-field homer that landed just inside the foul pole in the fourth, but kept the Mets off the board for the remainder of his stint with the help of a pair of double plays turned by the Pirates' infield.

New York did manage a run in the eighth on back-to-back doubles from Daniel Murphy and Wright off Tony Watson, but went down in order against Mark Melancon in the ninth as the Pirates' closer picked up his 14th save.

Game Notes

Matsuzaka had gone 34 consecutive innings without allowing a home run until surrendering Polanco's shot, which gave the Pirates a homer in a season-best seven straight games ... Watson entered the game having not permitted an earned run in his last 26 appearances, a span of 26 1/3 innings ... Juan Lagares, activated from the disabled list prior to the game, went 1-for-4 for New York in his first game since June 1 ... Pittsburgh outfielder Starling Marte sat out a second straight day while recovering from a knee to the head Tuesday at Tampa Bay.
