Cards unleash Wainwright on Marlins

(SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Wainwright aims to secure his major league-leading 15th victory of the season on Tuesday evening when the St. Louis Cardinals try to even their three-game set with the Miami Marlins.

Wainwright is coming off a 5-2 win over Boston on Thursday as he gave up both runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out seven, moving to 14-6 with a 2.28 earned run average that is third best in the National League.

The win also came six days after the 32-year-old righty was rocked for seven runs in 5 1/3 frames of a loss to Milwaukee.

"It was just another grind, another battle," Wainwright said following the win over the Red Sox. "I think I finally made some good adjustments that helped me in the long run today."

Wainwright is 4-1 in his career with a 2.11 ERA in eight meetings (6 starts) versus the Marlins.

If Wainwright wants to improve on those numbers, he'll have to slow down Miami outfielder Giancarlo Stanton. The right-handed slugger homered twice in Monday's series-opening 6-5 win, hitting a two-run shot and a solo homer to help the Marlins win for the third time in four games following a 2-6 stretch.

As if his power wasn't enough, Stanton also made a fantastic diving catch to rob an extra-base hit from St. Louis' Kolten Wong in the fifth inning.

"I didn't think he had a chance at it ... he ran a long way for that ball," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Stanton's catch.

Stanton's 31 homers are tied for the most in baseball as he has gone deep five times in his last five games while driving in eight runs. However, he is 0- for-2 lifetime versus Wainwright with a walk.

The Cardinals had the game-tying run at first base in the ninth after plating two runs against Marlins closer Steve Cishek, but the submarine right-hander struck out Matt Adams to end the game and record his 30th save of the year.

Matt Holliday had four hits and drove in a run in defeat, while Jon Jay connected on a two-run homer. Still, the Cardinals have lost four of six and sit three games behind Milwaukee for first place in the NL Central.

"Those guys have been playing unreal," Wong said of the Marlins. "It was tough for us."

St. Louis will look to rebound tonight against Miami right-hander Jared Cosart, who makes his second start since being acquired from Houston.

Cosart lost his Marlins debut on Aug. 1, touched for four runs on four hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings versus the Cincinnati Reds. He then had his next start skipped due to a sore oblique, but was able to complete a bullpen session on Saturday with no issues.

"I think I'm over it," Cosart said on Miami's website.

The 24-year-old had gone 9-7 with a 4.41 ERA with the Astros before getting dealt and will face the Cardinals for the first time.

The Cardinals have lost four of their last five in Miami after winning seven straight there.
