National League Game Summary - Arizona at Miami

(Friday, August 15)

Final Score: Arizona 3, Miami 2

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Cliff Pennington and Aaron Hill each homered to help the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 3-2 win over the Miami Marlins in the second of a four-game set from Marlins Park.

Trevor Cahill (3-8) recorded the win after going 6 2/3 innings, yielding two runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Brad Hand (2-5) allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings of work in the setback. Giancarlo Stanton and Garrett Jones knocked in a run apiece for Miami, which had won five of seven entering the contest.

"He gave us what we needed, enough to win this ball game," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Hand.

Pennington wrapped a solo homer around the foul pole in left in the first inning to open the scoring. After a strikeout by David Peralta, Mark Trumbo reached on a well-placed swinging bunt that dribbled down the third-base line. Hill followed with a drive to left that staked the visitors to a 3-0 lead.

"(Pennington) is swinging the bat really good," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "He's just playing real good baseball for us."

Christian Yelich led off the home first with a single to left before Donovan Solano ripped a base hit off the glove of Cahill that bounced into shallow right. Stanton kept the line moving with a single to left that plated Yelich.

Jones singled home Solano two batters later to cut the lead to 3-2, but Jarrod Saltalamacchia grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Both starters settled down from there to shut each team's offense down over the next six innings. Hand surrendered just two hits after the first inning, while Cahill kept the Marlins off the board despite running into some trouble in the seventh.

Adeiny Hechavarria singled with two outs in the frame and pinch-hitter Reed Johnson was plunked by Cahill, who was then relieved by Matt Stites.

Stites uncorked a wild pitch that allowed both runners to advance before walking Yelich to load the bases. Solano left the runners stranded, however, by grounding into an inning-ending force out to shortstop.

Miami put runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, but Saltalamacchia bounced into another double play that ended the inning.

Addison Reed set the Marlins down in order in the ninth to record his 29th save of the season.

Game Notes

Arizona's Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to 14 games by going 1- for-3 ... Pennington was the only player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 ... Miami outhit the D-backs, 7-6 ... Arizona went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, while Miami went 2-for-7 in those cases.
