Moore introduced as NC State women's coach

Posted April 8, 2013

— Wes Moore was introduced as the head women’s basketball coach at NC State Monday, but the formality was celebrated as more of a homecoming.

Moore, the only coach in NCAA history to lead teams to the Division I, II and II NCAA tournament, spent two years under Kay Yow as an assistant. He was familiar with Raleigh and the Wolfpack program when they enjoyed success in the mid-1990s.

“This is a special place, and that is what it took for me to leave Chattanooga. A lot of people have helped to get me here,” Moore said. “We have a whole lot of work to do but there are a lot of reasons for optimism.”

Moore has spent the last 15 seasons at Chattanooga, guiding them to 12 Southern Conference regular season titles and nine NCAA tournament appearances.

“He is a winning coach by any measure on the court that you can imagine,” said chancellor Randy Woodson.

“He is a coach who has refused to accept the status quo his entire career,” added athletics director Debbie Yow. “It’s always a benefit if you have some sort of familiarity with the school but that was not germane to the selection. Coach Moore was the whole package, that is why we chose him.”

Wearing a red and black tie, flanked by Yow and Woodson, Moore was confident but realistic in his expectations as he replaces Kellie Harper.

Harper was 70-64 overall in four years at NC State but did not exceed a .500 mark in conference play in any of those seasons

“I’m not coming into it blind. I know we have a lot of work to do,” Moore said. “We have to get ourselves back into that mode of being a factor here.”

NC State was a mainstay in the postseason during Kay Yow’s watch going to the NCAA (or AIWA) tournament 25 times in 34 years. Moore said Monday that a combination of reputation and recruiting can help them get back to those successful times.

“We don't have to try an tell people we think we can get this done, we know we can get this done,” Moore said. “I think we will try and recruit the east coast hard. You have got to sign a couple of players a year that will help you get there and build on it. Then you have to make sure you prepare those kids daily.”

Moore said that he met with the team Sunday night and immediately made it known that he expects a family atmosphere. He said that he will build the program “with character and integrity” but they were not going to shy away from competition.

“You can get in a tube and coast down the river or you can get in a kayak and shoot the rapids,” Moore said. “We are going to shoot the rapids.”

Yow knows best....wait until her new hire for our football team has at least 2 years under his belt...the same will be for the lady wolfpack...just give it some time

They rooked Yow's assistant coach. No brainer.

Start by building a defense. If you are not a great scoring team you can make up for part of the lack of offense with a great defense. Good luck. Most people who cared about the lady Wolf Pack knew that last hire was a waste of money, energy, and talent.
