MSOC: Albadawi Lifts Pack to 3-2 Win

Posted October 25, 2013

— Nazmi Albadawi returned from injury and sparked NC State men’s soccer to a 3-2 win over Virginia Tech on Friday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

Albadawi, the Pack’s team captain and senior midfielder, had been sidelined for State’s last five matches after suffering an injury on October 1 at Gardner-Webb. Albadawi made his return in impressive fashion, scoring two goals and adding an assist to lead the Wolfpack (6-4-4, 2-4-3 ACC) to victory.

“It’s great to have Nazmi back,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. “We’re in a good position to finish strong, and I think he’ll be a big part of that. This is what we wanted to do this week. We’re playing well when you want to play well. The last five games are important to the NCAA, and I think we’re putting ourselves in a good position with tough games left.”

Nick Surkamp put the Wolfpack on the board in the 21st minute. Clement Simonin directed a long ball to Albadawi, who dished to Surkamp for a strike off of the right post from straight on. The goal marked Surkamp’s sixth of the year, good for the team lead.

Albadawi and Alex Martinez connected for the Pack’s next two scores. In the 31st minute, Albadawi gave State a 2-0 lead over the Hokies (4-5-5, 1-3-5) by hooking a shot inside the right post from 10 yards away. Martinez set up the goal with a run up the right side and assist to Albadawi.

After enjoying a 2-0 advantage at the break, State added to its lead in the 61st minute when Martinez found Albadawi for a second time. This time, Martinez spied him on a throw-in, and Albadawi finished from 12 yards to the back post. The pair of assists give Martinez seven for the season to lead the Pack.

Virginia Tech made the final moments interesting by scoring a pair of late goals to trim the lead. The Hokies earned a penalty kick in the 73rd minute for the first. Robert Alberti finished the PK, and scored again 12 minutes later on an assist from Kai Marshall.

State’s defense responded late to salt away the final six minutes. Fabian Otte recorded a pair of saves on the night, including denying a crucial chance with a diving stop as the Pack nursed a 3-2 lead.

NC State returns to action on Tuesday, October 29 to host Appalachian State on Senior Night. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m. Streaming coverage will be provided by GoPack All-Access. Fans can also follow along with live stats on GoPack.com, or on Twitter via @PackMensSoccer.
