— North Carolina's Jonathan Campbell and Verneri Valimaa were named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team, as announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Thursday.

Campbell, a sophomore defender from Greensboro, lands on the academic team for the second-consecutive season. He also earned Capital One Academic All-District honors back in the fall.

The business administration major started all 18 games he appeared in during the 2013 campaign, helping anchor one of the top back lines in college soccer. Campbell was an All-ACC second team selection that also earned All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Valimaa, a junior midfielder from Coral Springs, Fla., started 11 games and played in 18 matches for the Tar Heels. He scored one goal and had one assist last season.

All 12 schools that compete in men’s soccer are represented on this year’s All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
