NC State men’s soccer secured a 2-0 victory over Liberty on Tuesday night at Dail Soccer Stadium behind goals from Nick Surkamp and Alex Martinez.

“We had a very complete performance tonight,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. “We held possession for most of the first half, maybe let them into the game for a portion of the second half, but we scored a good goal and finished the game off. It’s always good to post a shutout, and we were able to run several guys through, so hopefully we’ll have fresh legs going forward.”

Goalkeeper Fabian Otte turned in his fourth shutout of the season for the Wolfpack (5-4-4), and 12th of his career to pull into eighth on the Pack’s all-time leaderboard. Otte was only forced to make one save on the evening, thanks to superb play from the Wolfpack defense.

State outshot the Flames 12-4 on the night, and earned five corners to Liberty’s two. Holding a 1-0 lead, the Pack allowed just one shot over the final 45 minutes to cement the win.

Surkamp scored the first goal of the match in the 20th minute. Gbenga Makinde started the play with a cross to the right side of the Liberty (7-6) net. Ryan Metts collected the cross and fought through a defender to deliver his first assist of the year. Surkamp tapped home the pass from Metts, inside the right post.

The Wolfpack had to withstand mounting pressure during the second half as Liberty looked for an equalizer. State’s back line proved up to the task, denying the Flames from generating any quality chances.

Martinez sealed the match in the 81st minute. Danny DiPrima created a turnover at midfield and slipped a through pass to Martinez up the right side. Martinez knifed his way into the Liberty box on one touch and drove his second goal of the year into the left half of the net.

The Wolfpack returns to action on Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m. when NC State hosts Virginia Tech in a pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference tilt. Streaming coverage will be provided by GoPack All-Access.
