MSOC: Pack Drops No. 10 UNC, 1-0 (OT)

Posted November 8, 2013

— NC State men’s soccer capped its regular season with a thrilling 1-0 win in overtime against the 10th-ranked Tar Heels on Friday night at Fetzer Field.

The Wolfpack (8-5-4, 3-5-3 ACC) dominated possession throughout the second half, but had to wait until extra time for Nazmi Albadawi’s game-winner on an assist from Moss Jackson-Atogi. Albadawi’s fifth goal of the year came on a long ball in the 92nd minute. Jackson-Atogi’s pass bounced high in the Tar Heel (8-4-5, 4-2-5) box, allowing Albadawi to hustle for possession and touch the golden goal home.

Albadawi’s goal is the first one allowed by the North Carolina defense in its last 425 minutes played, dating back to October 22.

“I’m very pleased for our team, our seniors, and our program,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. “We’ve made great progress this year, and I expect us to keep getting stronger and stronger. I thought that our seniors deserved this win, and Nazmi deserved to get the game-winner. Our expectation is to earn a selection for the NCAA Tournament, and our plan is to prepare this week for that opportunity.”

In a wild game from start to finish, senior goalkeeper Fabian Otte rose to the challenge with six saves to claim the 13th shutout of his career, and fifth clean sheet of the season. Otte climbs into a tie for seventh on the Pack’s all-time shutouts list.

State held strong through the opening run of play, before taking control of the match near the end of the first half and never looking back. In the 38th minute, Albadawi beat his man and sent a pass along the ground to a streaking Roland Minogue, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

In the 44th minute, Holden Fender put the Pack’s first shot on goal, a bullet ripped along the ground from 25 yards, but UNC goalkeeper Brendan Moore came up with the first of three terrific saves on the night to deny him.

In the 79th minute, Minogue nearly hit paydirt again, sending a header off of the far post. With just over a minute remaining in regulation, Nick Surkamp hustled after a slow rolling back pass that ended up loose in front of the UNC net, but arrived a fraction late, giving the keeper time to clear it out of danger.

State didn’t have to wait long for Albadawi to produce the golden goal, coming just under two minutes into the first overtime period.

NC State turns its attention to the NCAA Selection committee and a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Fans can follow along with the latest Wolfpack soccer news by following @PackMensSoccer on Twitter.
