— NC State men’s soccer outshot Boston College 22-9, but couldn’t muster a late equalizer to fall 2-1 to the Eagles on Friday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

The Wolfpack (4-2-1, 1-2-1 ACC) produced a number of quality chances on the night and controlled possession throughout, then allowed Boston College (4-2-2, 2-1-1) to escape with a victory.

“I thought we were better than the other team tonight, but we can’t give away goals and force ourselves to play from behind,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. “That’s when you get stretched a little bit, you have to work a little harder. We need to be more mature in those key moments.”

Clement Simonin contributed the lone State goal of the match, assisted by Moss Jackson-Atogi and Holden Fender. Fender started the play on a corner kick, sent to the far post where Jackson-Atogi redirected a ball to Simonin for the finishing strike from eight yards.

That goal tied the score in the 65th minute, after BC opened the scoring with Matt Wendelken’s header in the 48th. Zeiko Lewis collected the assist by sending a free kick from outside the box toward the left post. Wendelken deposited the opening goal with a header to the right half of the net.

The Pack camped out in Eagles’ territory for nearly the rest of the game, except for a critical breakdown in the 80th minute. From the top of the box, BC’s Giuliano Frano slipped a centering pass to Atobra Ampadu, who fired his second goal of the year into the left side.

State played the rest of the match on a constant attack, keeping the outcome in question until the final moments. In the 89th minute, the Wolfpack moved goalkeeper Fabian Otte all the way into the Boston College box, trying furiously to tie the game.

The Pack managed to create two shots, two corners, and three deep throw-ins during the final 43 seconds with the extra man. Despite those chances, State wasn’t able to find the scoring touch, helping Boston College slip past with a 2-1 victory.

NC State returns to action on Tuesday, October 1 at Gardner-Webb. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Fans can follow along with live stats on GoPack.com, or on Twitter by following @PackMensSoccer.
