MSOC: Pack Ties No. 10 Wake, 2-2

— NC State men’s soccer nearly broke through in the first overtime period, but settled for a 2-2 (2OT) draw against No. 10 Wake Forest on Tuesday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

“I’m pleased with the effort from our guys tonight,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley, “but I’m disappointed that we didn’t get a win. I thought we played well, some guys stepped up, and we’re growing a lot as a team. That’s great to see.”

The Wolfpack (4-3-3, 1-3-2 ACC) produced a pair of potentially game-winning chances in the first overtime period.

Danny DiPrima created a turnover near the Wake Forest (6-2-3, 4-0-2) end line in the 94th minute. Nick Surkamp gathered a cross from DiPrima and put a shot on goal, but was denied by the diving Deacon keeper. Travis Wannemuehler claimed the rebound and fired to the left post, but a Wake defender slid in to clear it off the line. State’s defense rose to the challenge from there to preserve a 2-2 tie.

The Pack earned those chances by going toe-to-toe with the 10th-ranked Deacons for 90 minutes of regulation after falling into a 1-0 deficit in the 26th minute on Sean Okoli’s first goal of the match.

Philip Carmon evened the score in the 39th minute with a physical play in traffic. Matt Ingram worked the ball into the box and had a shot blocked by the end line. In the ensuing scramble, Carmon knifed his way into position and drove home the equalizer through a crowd.

Michael Bajza scored his second goal of the year in the 54th minute to grant the Wolfpack a 2-1 advantage. Wannemuehler started the chance with a cross to Surkamp. His volley was batted down by the keeper, but Bajza raced in to finish the rebound from 10 yards.

State’s defense held strong until the 76th minute, when Okoli deposited his second goal of the night to knot the score at 2-2.

Wolfpack goalkeeper Fabian Otte finished with six saves. Surkamp earned his first assist of the year on Bajza’s goal.
