An exhibition match with Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew and eight opponents that appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season highlight another challenging schedule for the University of North Carolina men’s soccer team in 2014, announced Tuesday by head coach Carlos Somoano.

Carolina has assembled another tough slate for the 2014 campaign, including non-conference games against 2013 NCAA participants California (Regional Finalist), Old Dominion (1st round), UCLA (3rd round), VCU (1st round) and William & Mary (1st round).

The Tar Heels will also play at defending national-champion Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 26 and host College Cup participant Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 1 to close out the regular season.

For the first time in league history, the ACC, which will include 12 teams, will not play a complete round robin. Carolina will play eight conference foes with home matches against Pittsburgh, Clemson, Virginia Tech and the aforementioned Cavaliers.

League road dates include Duke, Notre Dame, NC State and Boston College.

In the ACC rotation, UNC will not play regular season games this season against Louisville, Syracuse and Wake Forest.

Other non-conference opponents include home dates with Campbell, Georgia Southern and Georgia State and a road contest at UNC Wilmington.

The Tuesday, Aug. 19 contest against the Columbus Crew marks the second annual Kirk Urso Memorial Match. The match will be played at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, and will honor Urso, a first round Supplemental Draft selection in 2012 who graduated from North Carolina, where he made four consecutive NCAA Men’s College Cup appearances and captained the team to the 2011 NCAA National Championship.

Carolina will play two additional exhibition matches to open the 2014 season. The Tar Heels will host Gardner-Webb on Friday, Aug. 15 and play at Wake Forest on Saturday, Aug. 23 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The ACC Tournament will run Nov. 5 and 9 at campus sites, while the semifinals and finals will be played Nov. 14 and 16. The 2014 College Cup is back in Cary, N.C., on Dec. 12-14 at WakeMed Soccer Park.
