Los Angeles — The NC State men’s swimming & diving team finished first in four events on Saturday, but was unable to overcome the University of Southern California Trojans, and fell 173-119 in the final point standings. The Wolfpack won the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 butterfly, and 400 individual medley.
“We had a strong day today racing against the Trojans,” head coach Braden Holloway said. “I think we’re ahead of where we were last year at this time, which is a good sign.”
The meet began with the 200 medley relay, with the team composed of Ian Bishop, Ivan Kopas, Joe Martin, and Barrett Miesfeld finishing second with a time of 1:29.71. In the 200 freestyle, Jonathan Boffa posted a time of 1:38.36, good for second place. David Williams placed fifth in the event with a time of 1:40.97.
Kopas led the Pack in the 100 and 200 backstroke, stopping the clock at 49.63 in the 100 and 1:47.04 in the 200, claiming third in both events. Michael Camper finished fifth in both the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 51.20 and 1:50.84, respectively.
In the 100 breastroke, Bishop finished second (56.20) to highlight the Wolfpack’s performance in the event. Jake Matysek collected second in the 200 breastroke, while Bishop finished fourth.
State won its first event of the day when Martin recorded a time of 20.70 seconds in the 50 freestyle, just tenths of a second faster than Boffa who finished third. Boffa also had an impressive showing in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.44 to claim second. In the 500 freestyle, Brandon Kingston finished fourth and freshman Louis Wojciechowski finished sixth.
The 200 freestyle relay was also an event in which the Wolfpack shined, finishing first and second. The team of Kingston, Kopas, Miesfeld, and Gerard Woody collected first place honors (1:21.39), while Simonas Bilis, Boffa, Martin, and Williams clocked in second (1:23.69).
“It was a good team effort and start to the season,” said Holloway. “I’d like to thank the Trojans for allowing us to come over, race and train with them.”
The Wolfpack dominated the 100 butterfly event as State swimmers finished first, second and third. Miesfeld collected first with a time of 47.85, while John Newell and Christian McCurdy finished second (51.04) and third (51.24), respectively.
McCurdy cruised to a first place finish in the 400 individual medley, with a time of 4:01.45. Camper and Brian Via finished second and third, with times of 4:01.77 and 4:17.31, respectively.
The Wolfpack will return to action Nov. 2 against East Carolina at 5 p.m., when it hosts the first home meet of the season. The women’s team will compete against the Louisiana State University Tigers Oct. 27 in Baton Rouge, La.
