MTEN: NC State Falls to Florida State

Tallahassee, Fla. — The NC State men’s tennis team dropped its match at No. 41 Florida State, 4-3, Friday evening at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
The Wolfpack (11-5, 0-3 ACC) opened the match by capturing the opening doubles point for the 12th time this season with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
The tandem of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster captured the first match of the evening from the top position of the lineup, as the duo overwhelmed FSU’s Dominic Cotrone and
Blake Davis, 8-2. The ‘Noles answered with a victory at the No. 3 spot in the order, as
Austin Powell and Parker McGuinness were edged 8-5 by Michael Rinaldi and Grayson Goldin.
In the deciding match for the crucial opening point, the 27th-ranked tandem of Sean Weber and Nick Horton outlasted Marco Nunez and Cristian Gonzalez Mendez, 8-6. This is the second consecutive match that Weber and Horton sealed the doubles point for State.
In singles, Florida State (13-5, 2-1 ACC) earned a victory in the first two matches to take a 2-1 lead. At the No. 3 spot in the order, Davis defeated Weber, 6-1, 6-2, while Powell was defeated by Cotrone at the top position, 6-4, 6-4.
Simon Norenius evened the team score at 2-2 with his straight-set 6-4, 6-4 victory against Rinaldi on court five. Meanwhile, Horton dropped his match against Nunez at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (4), while Mudge was outlasted on court two in a decisive third set, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, against Mendez.
At the sixth position, McGuiness picked up his first career ACC victory, as he earned a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory against FSU’s Goldin.
The Pack will return to the courts on Sunday, March 23 at Miami. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
