MTEN: NC State Falls to No. 11 UNC

The No. 25 NC State men’s tennis team dropped its match against No. 11 North Carolina, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium.

The Pack opened the match by claiming the opening doubles point for the 11th time this season.

North Carolina (14-2, 1-0 ACC) claimed a victory at the No. 3 position, as Ronnie Schneider and Jack
Murray defeated Beck Bond and Austin Powell, 8-3. State (11-4, 0-2 ACC) answered with a win at the top spot of the doubles lineup, as the duo of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster edged UNC’s Nelson Vick and Oysten Steiro, 8-6. Mudge and Dempster now own an 11-1 record this season.

In the deciding match of doubles, Nick Horton and Sean Weber outlasted Brett Clark and Brayden Schnur in a tiebreak, 8-7 (3). The victory for Horton and Weber is their eighth of the campaign.
UNC took a 2-1 lead after winning the first two matches in singles play. At the No. 3 position, Weigel dropped his match against Clark, 6-4, 6-4, while Mudge was defeated by Schneider on court two, 7-5, 6-3.

Horton knotted the score at 2-2 with a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 victory against Vick of UNC at the sixth position. Meanwhile, Powell forced a decisive third set in his match at the top position of the lineup, but was outlasted by Schnur, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

A native of Raleigh, Weber won the last three games in the second set to force a third and final set. The senior went on to cruise in the final frame, as he captured a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory against Murray at the No. 4 position to tie the score once more at 3-3. UNC sealed the team win at the No. 5 spot in the order, as Norenius dropped his match against Steiro in the decisive third set, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Up next, the Pack will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on Florida State at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 21.
