— The 35th-ranked NC State men’s tennis team began its 2014 dual season by picking up two victories on Saturday inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the wins, the Wolfpack starts the season with a 2-0 record.

“We showed a lot of mental toughness, a lot of maturity and a lot of professionalism,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “That was a pretty good performance by us today against a good UNC Greensboro team and a good NC Central team. Our guys were consistent in going out there and doing what they needed to do in order to be successful.”

All matches on Saturday were played under the new ITA experimental scoring format, battling to six-game sets in doubles with no-ad scoring and tiebreakers at 5-5. Singles play also featured no-ad scoring and tiebreakers at 5-5.

NC State 7, UNC Greensboro 0

NC State swept the doubles point and claimed all six singles matches, as the Wolfpack captured its 10th consecutive victory to open a season against UNC Greensboro, 7-0.

The junior pair of Austin Powell and Beck Bond captured the first match of the day in doubles at the No. 3 position. The pair utilized an early break against UNCG’s Jimmy Roueche and Nazhone Wilkins on their way to a 6-2 victory. Freshman Ian Dempster and junior Robbie Mudge were able to seal the doubles point for the Pack with a 6-2 win over UNCG’s Daniel Mack and Ahmet Sarioglu from the No. 2 position.

At the No.1 spot, freshman Nick Horton and senior Sean Weber, the 19th-ranked duo in the country, completed the sweep for the Pack with a 6-5 (5) win against James Dougherty and Randy Philips.

Mudge, ranked 76th in the ITA rankings, increased the NC State lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set victory from the No. 3 position against Randy Philips, before Powell won his match over James Dougherty, 6-2, 6-4.

Playing in the first dual match of his NC State career, Horton sealed the team victory for the Wolfpack, as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Daniel Mack of the Spartans.

“As a team, we couldn’t have asked for a better start,” Horton said after competing in his first dual match at NC State. “I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be, I felt really good with the preparation coming into the season.”
Thomas Weigel earned a victory from the No. 1 position for the first time in his career, as he defeated Ahmet Sarioglu, 6-4, 6-5 (5). Bond was able to keep the momentum in State’s favor, as he claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory from the No. 6 position, while Weber completed the shutout for the Pack with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Gaston Murray from the No. 5 position.
