Orlando, Fla. — Sophomore Jason Tahir and freshman Michael Redlicki captured the doubles title in the gold draw on Sunday, as the Duke men’s tennis team concluded play at the United States Tennis Association Clay Court Invitational at Disney, hosted by Florida State at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Redlicki and Tahir edged Kentucky’s Tom Jomby and Kai-Wen Lai, 8-6, in the finals to earn their second doubles title of the fall. They previously won the white doubles draw final in the Duke Fab Four Invitational in September. Earlier on Sunday, the team downed Florida State’s Benjamin Lock and Dominic Cotrone, 8-3, in the semifinals. Redlicki and Tahir now own an 8-3 record for the fall season.
After defeating two ranked opponents to earn a spot in the finals of the gold singles draw on Saturday, Redlicki was defeated by Southern California’s Robert Quiroz, 6-1, 6-3. Quiroz, the 85th-ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason rankings, marks the third ranked player Redlicki faced in the tournament and is the first ranked opponent to defeat the Blue Devil rookie this fall.
In the spear singles consolation draw, freshman Daniel McCall downed Florida Atlantic’s Sean Bacha, 6-4, 6-2, while fellow rookie Josh Levine defeated Southern California’s Michael Grant, 6-4, 6-1 in the garnet singles consolation draw.
The Blue Devils will conclude their fall season by competing at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 8-11 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
