East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen saw his collegiate career come to an end Thursday morning with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to 16th-ranked Søren Hess-Olesen of Texas in the second round of the NCAA Division I Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Vliegen, ranked 25th by the ITA, finished the 2013-14 season with an overall singles record of 32-8. He was named Conference USA Player-of-the-Year and recipient of the ITA Carolina Region Most Improved Senior award. He also earned first-team all-league honors for the second consecutive season.
Vliegen is the only player in school history to compete in the NCAA Championships in both singles and doubles. He became the first Pirate to qualify for the singles championships this season, a year after teaming with Colin Roller to become the first pair to participate in the doubles championships. The native Belgian concluded his career with an individual record of 109-30.
