MTEN: Weber, Mudge Advance in Doubles at ITA Carolina Regional

Cary, N.C. — Senior Sean Weber and junior Robbie Mudge of the NC State men’s tennis team punched their ticket to the doubles quarterfinal on the third day of action Saturday in the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships at Cary Tennis Park.
Mudge and Weber advanced to the doubles quarterfinal round with an upset against third-seeded Chip Cox and Kyle Koch of South Carolina, 8-5. The Pack tandem will next play the pair of Hunter Harrington and Dominique Maden of Clemson.
In singles action, Mudge and sophomore Thomas Weigel each advanced to the quarterfinals during the morning.
A native of Bocholt, Germany, Weigel defeated sixth-seeded Harrington of Clemson in the round of 16, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-1. In his quarterfinal match, Weigel forced a decisive third set, before ultimately being outlasted by UNC’s Brett Clark, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
As the tournament’s 15th-seed, Mudge defeated Danny Mack of UNC Greensboro in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-4, in the round of 16, before falling to third-seeded Michael Redlicki of Duke, 6-4, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.
Two rounds of doubles and one round of singles are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., on Sunday.
