Zebulon, N.C. — The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored seven runs over three innings to topple the Carolina Mudcats 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. The Pelicans (9-7) take the four-game series by winning the final three. The Mudcats (6-10) have dropped nine of their last 10 games.
The Pelicans’ Nick Martinez (2-1) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits over 5.1 innings.
Jordan Cooper (0-2) absorbs a tough loss for Carolina after two inherited runners scored in the sixth. Trailing 3-2 with runners at first and second, Royce Bolinger drew a walk against reliever Rob Nixon to extend the frame. Drew Robinson then laced a double to the right-center gap that scored all three runners for a 5-3 Pelicans lead.
In all, Cooper surrendered four runs on five hits over 5.2 frames. He struck out four.
The two teams went back and forth before the pivotal sixth. Myrtle Beach scored first on a two-out double by Trever Adams in the opening frame. The Mudcats responded by scoring a run on a Tyler Naquin groundout in the third to tie the score.
The Pelicans retaliated with a run across in the fourth, thanks to a Royce Bolinger sac-fly to right, for a 2-1 lead. In the bottom half, the Mudcats’ Jerrud Sabourin earned his first of three hits with a single. Jordan Smith followed with a walk to put two on. Anthony Gallas drove in Sabourin with a hit, and Smith later scored on a double play grounder to give the Mudcats their first lead at 3-2.
After the Pelicans took the lead in the sixth, Myrtle Beach added a run in the seventh when Chris Grayson lined a home run over the right field wall. The solo shot was his first of the year. The Pelicans scored three more in the eighth thanks to a two-run homer by Bolinger, and a fly ball from Jake Skole.
Carolina added two runs in the eighth as Todd Hankins scored on a triple by Valerio. The Mudcats’ catcher scored on a groundout by Justin Toole.
