Salem, Va. — The Carolina Mudcats walked past the Salem Red Sox in a 7-1 victory on Sunday afternoon before dropping the nightcap 3-1 at LewisGale Field inside Salem Memorial Ballpark. The Mudcats (29-25, 51-73) remain a half-game behind the Red Sox (30-25, 63-62) for the presumptive wildcard in the Southern division.
Nick Pasquale (5-7) gave Carolina a strong start in game one, pitching six innings. He allowed one run, a solo homer to Keury De La Cruz, five hits, walked one and struck out three. J.D. Reichenbach tossed a scoreless seventh to finish off the win.
Kyle Stroup (4-9) struggled with his command in the loss. The right-hander tied a season-high with four walks over two innings, allowed two runs on two hits and did not record a strikeout.
The Mudcats scored twice off Stroup in the second inning. With two on and one out, Alex Lavisky sent a fly ball to left field to score Tony Wolters on the sacrifice. Jordan Smith later doubled in Erik Gonzalez for a 2-0 lead.
Against Gerardo Oliveras in the third, Carolina drew three walks to open the floodgates. Paddy Matera drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Erik Gonzalez. Logan Vick knocked in two with a single and Smith’s second double produced two more runs before Robby Scott came on to pitch the final out.
In game two, the Salem Red Sox scored three times off Owen Dew (3-7). The right-hander’s spot start was finished after two innings. He allowed three runs on four hits.
Michael McCarthy (4-2) allowed one unearned run over 5.2 innings while scattering three hits for the win. Matty Ott tossed the final 1.1 frames for his fourth save.
Sean Coyle launched a solo home run off Dew to begin the first inning and produced a second run on a sacrifice fly to right in the second. Matt Gedman scored Mookie Betts on a hit-and-run from second base.
Carolina’s only run against McCarthy came in the fourth. Joey Wendle drew a one-out walk, and raced to third on an errant pick off throw by the pitcher that sailed down the right field line. Matera’s sac-fly to left scored Wendle for the only tally.
The Mudcats continue their series in Salem on Monday night. First pitch against the Red Sox at LewisGale Field is set for 7:05 p.m. Carolina returns home to host the Lynchburg Hillcats on Wednesday, August 21st.
