Winston-Salem, N.C. — Jerrud Sabourin singled home Yhoxian Medina in the 12th inning for his third RBI of the night and the Carolina Mudcats beat the Winston-Salem Dash 6-5 on Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Mudcats (31-31, 60-69) became the first visiting club to sweep a four-game set from the Dash (28-35, 58-74) in the Triad since BB&T Ballpark opened in 2010.
Benny Suarez (2-3) tossed two hitless innings in relief for the win. Grant Sides kept the Dash off the scoreboard in the last of the 12th for his sixth save. Zach Isler (1-8) suffered a second loss in consecutive days to the Mudcats after surrendering a run on three hits in one inning.
The Dash jumped out to a 4-0 lead through four innings against starter Dylan Baker and the Mudcats thanks to RBI from Jake Peter and Omar Narvaez. A throwing error on Medina in the fourth allowed two more runs across.
Carolina started the rally back in the fifth by scoring two. Sabourin doubled home Yandy Diaz from second and scored on a single by Torsten Boss.
Erratic command from Dash relievers allowed the Mudcats to take the lead in the sixth. The club scored three runs with one hit and was aided by four walks. A wild pitch scored Medina from third to tie the score and Jose Bautista plunked Luigi Rodriguez to force home the go-ahead run.
Omar Narvaez began the eighth inning with a double off reliever Clayton Cook that sparked a comeback for the Dash. Nick Basto moved Narvaez to third with a sacrifice bunt and C.J. Beatty brought him home with a sac-fly to right.
The clubs played to a stalemate through 11 innings before the Mudcats broke through on three straight hits. Medina hit a sharp grounder to first for an infield hit. Diaz followed with a single through the right side on a hit-and-run that advanced Medina to third. Sabourin followed with a liner to center that allowed Medina across for the decider.
The Mudcats return home for the final seven games of the year with four against the Lynchburg Hillcats and three with the Dash. It’s “Dollar Dog Night” presented by Carolina Packers on Tuesday at Five County Stadium as the Mudcats host the Hillcats. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m.
