Mudcats win by widest margin of season

Posted August 9, 2013

Cody Anderson scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings and the Carolina Mudcats beat the Frederick Keys in a 12-1 rout on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Mudcats (26-19, 48-67) claimed their first series win in Maryland and matched their largest victory margin of 2013. The Keys fall to 19-26 in the second half and 53-61 overall.

Bryson Myles extended his hitting streak to 21 with three hits. His streak is now the longest by a player to ever wear a Mudcats uniform, surpassing Eric Reed’s 20-gamer set during the 2004-2005 seasons.

Anderson (9-4) held an opponent scoreless for the seventh time this year to earn his 10th quality start. The right-hander struck out five and walked one.

The Mudcats got to Keys’ starter Brady Wager (3-6) for six runs on eight hits over five innings. Tyler Naquin doubled on a ground ball inside the third base bag to lead off the game and later scored on a groundout by Paddy Matera.

Up 1-0 through three innings, Carolina scored three times off Wager in the fourth. Matera singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Bryson Myles. Third baseman Jason Esposito played the bunt, but his throw to first sailed into foul territory down the right field line, allowing Matera to third and Myles to second.

Tony Wolters scored Matera with a single and Myles raced home on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Jerrud Sabourin lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Wolters for a 4-0 lead.

Jordan Smith launched a two-run shot off the back wall beyond right field to score Naquin. The home run was Smith’s fourth and gave the Mudcats a 6-0 lead.

Carolina opened the floodgates in the seventh, scoring five runs. A two-run single from Myles and a double from Sabourin that produced two runs highlighted the barrage. A wild pitch scored another.

The clubs traded a run over the last two innings to give the final margin.

The Mudcats go for the series sweep against the Frederick Keys on Saturday night. First pitch at Harry Grove Stadium is set for 6 p.m. Carolina returns home August 14th to host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in a three-game series.
