Winston-Salem, N.C. — Carlos Moncrief mashed a three-run shot in the third inning, and the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Winston-Salem Dash 7-3 in front of 5,517 on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark.
The Mudcats (5-3) take over sole possession of first place in the Carolina League Southern division with the win. The Dash fall to 4-4.
Mudcats’ starter Michael Goodnight (1-0) earned his first win by holding the Dash to three runs over five innings. The right-hander allowed six hits and two walks.
Spencer Arroyo (0-1) made his second start against Carolina, and was hit hard again. The lefty allowed six runs on four hits in three innings. He walked six batters in the outing.
Winston-Salem jumped out to an early lead thanks to a towering, two-run blast by Trayce Thompson.
In the second frame, the Mudcats took the lead for good. A Jake Lowery double sandwiched by two walks loaded the bases for Ronny Rodriguez. The 19 year-old short stop singled in the first run. A walk to Delvi Cid tied the score at two. Tyler Holt followed with a base hit, and Carolina led 3-2.
Carlos Moncrief crushed a three-run homer 400 feet to right in the third inning to vault the Mudcats ahead 6-2.
The game turned sloppy in the middle innings. The clubs combined for four errors in the three innings, each allowing a run to score.
The Mudcats bullpen calmed the waters, however, as three relievers combined to shut out the Dash over the final four innings.
