Zebulon, N.C. — Strong pitching and timely hitting helped the Myrtle Beach Pelicans sweep a doubleheader against the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
The Pelicans (32-30) received a complete game from Nick Tepesch (6-3) in a 3-0 shutout of game one. Myrtle Beach topped the Mudcats (29-32) 8-1 in game two.
Myrtle Beach flirted with a no hitter in game two before Delvi Cid cracked his second home run over the season off the left field scoreboard.
Randol Rojas tossed four hitless innings for the Pelicans but did not factor in the decision. Zach Osborne (2-0) earned the game two victory despite allowing the Cid homer.
Francisco Jimenez (5-4) took the loss in the duel, allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings.
Edwin Garcia stole the show for the Pelicans in game two. The third baseman drove in a run in all four plate appearance on the night, totaling six RBI. He launched his first home run of the year, a three-run blast, in the sixth.
Yefry Castillo totaled four combined hits on the night. Odubel Herrera singled four times in game two.
Game one was all Tepesch. The right-hander scattered three hits and walked three over seven innings. The Pelicans pecked Mudcats’ starter Jordan Cooper (1-3) for three runs over four innings.
The Mudcats and Myrtle Beach Pelicans wrap up their weekend series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
