Seemingly out of the game, down five, the Carolina Mudcats put together a rally for the ages to beat the Salem Red Sox 14-8 on Sunday afternoon at LewisGale Field. The Mudcats scored 10 runs in the eighth, eight of those runs on eight hits with two outs.

Tyler Sturdevant (1-0) tossed a scoreless seventh for the win. The Mudcats finish the first half of the season 32-38, while Salem comes to the halfway point at 41-27-1. More Info     Carolina Mudcats Logo More Mudcats Stories

Ronny Rodriguez had a career afternoon for Carolina, going 5-for-5 with a double and plating two.

The loss went to Manny Rivera (3-4) after the lefty surrendered six runs on seven hits in two innings.

Jesus Aguilar and Rodriguez cracked back-to-back doubles to begin the eighth. After a pair of outs, Jake Lowery doubled off the right field wall. With the proverbial snowball rolling down hill, the Mudcats produced three consecutive singles by the top of the order to tighten the score 8-7.

Salem fetched right-hander Andrew Jones from the bullpen to stop the assault, but he proved ineffective as the hit parade continued. A base knock by Jeremie Tice tied the score, and Carolina took their first lead on Aguilar’s second hit of the inning. Rodriguez singled another run in for a 10-8 lead. Carlos Moncrief put the exclamation point on the miracle rally by belting a majestic, three-run blast to dead center.

Following Lowery’s second double of the game in the eighth, Giovanny Urshela doubled off the high wall in left. His third hit of the day scored Lowery for the final 14-8 score.

The Sox built an 8-3 advantage before the pivotal surge.

Carolina returns home to host Wilmington for three games on June 21. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
