Zebulon, N.C. — The Carolina Mudcats received dominating performances from Danny Salazar, Jordan Cooper and Grant Sides as the trio combined on a two-hit, 3-0, shutout of the Lynchburg Hillcats in front of 5,869 on Friday night at Five County Stadium.
The three hurlers combined to retire 14 consecutive hitters, and secured the fourth shutout of the season for the Mudcats (16-12, 48-50).
Salazar set the tone for the evening by tossing four innings. He scattered two hits, walked a pair and struck out five. The Hillcats fall to 14-14 in the second half, and 53-45 overall, with the loss.
Jordan Cooper (6-3) was perfect in relief of Salazar, facing the minimum over four innings. The right-hander struck out four while earning his fifth straight winning decision.
Grant Sides pitched the ninth, striking out two and walking two, for his fourth save.
Tony Wolters paced the Carolina offense with three hits. He doubled and scored on a Giovanny Urshela line drive to center in the first inning to give the Mudcats a 1-0 lead.
Jesus Aguilar and Anthony Gallas combined for the other two runs. Aguilar doubled and scored on a base hit to left by Gallas in the fourth to extend the lead to 2-0. After drawing a walk in the sixth, Aguilar scored on a sac-fly to left by Gallas to round out the scoring.
