The Carolina Mudcats stumbled out of the gates, allowing six runs over the first five innings, and fell to the Lynchburg Hillcats 7-4 in front of 2, 876 on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.

Carolina drops to 17-13 in the second half, and 49-51 overall. Lynchburg improves to 15-15 and 54-46 as they snap a four-game skid against the Mudcats in Zebulon. More Info     Carolina Mudcats Logo More Mudcats Stories

Michael Goodnight (2-9) struggled with his command from the outset, walking six hitters over five frames. The walks, coupled with six stolen bases and three errors, allowed six runs to score off the right-hander. Only three of the runs were earned.

Bolstered by his team’s offensive performance, Lynchburg’s Dimasther Delgado (6-4) cruised through five innings for the win. Matt Chaffee held off a late rally to record his fifth save of the year.
Lynchburg scored two runs in the first innings without a hit thanks to three walks, a pair of stolen bases and two errors. A two-out single by Dan Brewer in the second put the Hillcats further out front, 3-0.

In the fifth, a single, base on balls and a third error allowed another run to score for Lynchburg. Will Roberts entered the game in relief of Goodnight, but surrendered a bases-loaded hit to Michael Spina. The bouncer into center field scored two for a 6-0 Hillcats’ lead.

Roberts settled in after, tossing five frames. He allowed one run, a home run to Adam Milligan in the seventh, and scattered three hits.

Bo Greenwell extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a run-scoring hit in the fifth.

The Mudcats made things interesting in the last two frames. The club scored three in the eighth off reliever Ryne Harper, but left the bases loaded twice over the final two innings.

Carolina begins a seven-game road trip on Monday night. The team travels to Winston-Salem for the first of four games against the Dash. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. The Mudcats return home July 31 to host Myrtle Beach for three games.
