The Frederick Keys held the Carolina Mudcats without a run over the first eight innings en route to a 5-2 victory on Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Mudcats (63-75) scored twice in the ninth inning, snapping a 20-inning scoreless streak.
Jason Hammel (1-0), on a Major League rehab assignment with the Baltimore Orioles pitched five innings in victory. He held Carolina scoreless, scattering three hits. He struck out six batters.
Mike Rayl (10-9) took the loss in his final start of the season. The lefty allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings.
Frederick (60-77) scored twice against Rayl in the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Allan de San Miguel hit a ground ball to short. Ronny Rodriguez got the force at second, but a wild throw by Todd Hankins sailed into the first base dugout, allowing a second run to score.
The Keys struck again in the fifth, scoring a trio of runs on three hits.
Alex Monsalve started the Mudcats’ final gasp in the ninth with a double into the right field corner. The catcher scored on a triple by Delvi Cid, smoked into center field. Mark Bradley drove in Cid with a single to finish the scoring.
