Frederick, Md. — The Frederick Keys scored five unanswered over the second half of the game to drop the Carolina Mudcats 5-2 in the season finale on Monday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Carolina Mudcats finish the 2012 campaign with a 63-77 record while Frederick comes home with a 62-77 worksheet.
Trent Howard (4-11) earned the win by tossing five innings. He surrendered a two-run homer to Delvi Cid in the second inning that put the Mudcats up 2-0. Eric Beaulac pitched the final two stanzas for his only save of the year.
Will Roberts (5-10) allowed three runs, but only two earned, over five innings in his final start. A fourth inning error with the bases loaded allowed the Keys’ first run to score.
Tyler Townsend launched a two-run shot over the left field fence in the fifth inning off of Roberts to put the Keys ahead to stay, 3-2. Frederick tacked on two more with a solo shot by Steven Bumbry in the seventh, and a two-out single by Townsend in the eighth.
Carolina opens the 2013 season at home against the Winston-Salem Dash on April 5.
