— The Duke men’s cross country team opened 2014 competition Friday, posting a 2-2 record at the Virginia Duals in Charlottesville, Va. The Blue Devils earned victories over Liberty (20-35) and Norfolk State (17-38), while falling to Florida State (30-25) and Virginia (29-26) on the 4-kilometer course at Panorama Farms.

Duke fielded a young team in the contest, which was scored in dual-meet fashion, with the squad’s six competitors combining to own three collegiate cross country meets of experience between them.

Junior Henry Farley, representing Duke in a cross country meet for the first time in his college career, led the Blue Devils with a third-place finish, clocking a time of 12:35. Sophomore Daniel Moore, after missing all of last season to injury, returned to competition by finishing second among his teammates and fifth overall with a time of 12:41. Sophomore Brian Benesch and freshman Alec Kunzweiler placed 12th and 13th respectively, with times of 13:00 and 13:03, while freshman Shane Kreidel rounded out the scoring for Duke, placing 21st overall in a time of 13:19.

The Blue Devils’ next competition is scheduled for Sat., Sept. 13, as they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., for the JMU Invite.
