Spurs return home to face Utah

(SportsNetwork.com) - After claiming victory along the shores of the Crescent City, the San Antonio Spurs return to the AT&T Center Wednesday to open a four-game homestand versus the Utah Jazz.

The Spurs handed the New Orleans Pelicans a 101-95 setback Monday night for their fifth straight win and eighth in the last nine tries. Tony Parker was at it again with 27 points and handed out seven assists for the Spurs, who shot 52.2 percent from the floor and got 18 points and nine rebounds from Tim Duncan before he fouled out with about six minutes left.

"I was in attack mode," Parker said. "When I saw TD (Duncan) go out, I knew I was going to be aggressive and try to create for myself or for my teammates."

Manu Ginobili returned from a two-game absence because of a hamstring issue and scored 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Kawhi Leonard and Marco Belinelli ended with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

San Antonio guard Danny Green missed his first game with a fractured finger in his left hand and is expected to miss about four weeks.

The Spurs are 24-0 when leading after three quarters and will also host Portland, Milwaukee and Oklahoma City on this homestand. They have won three straight in the Alamo City and sport a 15-5 mark as the host.

Utah went 2-1 on a recent homestand and is scheduled to play three in a row on the road against San Antonio, Detroit and Minnesota.

The Jazz won for the fourth time in six tries with Monday's 118-103 victory over the Denver Nuggets, as Alec Burks scored a career-high 34 points on 13- of-19 shooting to lead five players in double figures. Burks picked up the slack for leading scorer Gordon Hayward, who has missed back-to-back games with a hip injury and is averaging 17.1 ppg. He is probable Wednesday.

"It was a good effort for everybody. I happened to make some shots. It was a great game and we got the win," Burks said.

Derrick Favors added 19 points and 15 rebounds, Trey Burke tallied 18 points and eight assists and Richard Jefferson chipped in 16 points for Utah. The Jazz made 55.7 percent of their shots and claimed victory No. 100 for head coach Tyrone Corbin (100-115).

The Jazz lost the first two meetings of the season against the Spurs -- both in Salt Lake City -- and will visit the Alamo City again on March 16. The Spurs have won three straight and 14 of the past 20 contests with Utah, which has dropped five in a row and 25 of the last 27 encounters in Texas.

Favors is averaging 13.0 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games versus the Spurs this season. Duncan is posting an average of 18.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in two matchups with the Jazz, and Parker is averaging 18.5 ppg in that span.
