NBA Game Summary - Philadelphia at Washington

(Friday, November 1st)

Final Score: Philadelphia 109, Washington 102

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Rookie Michael Carter-Williams hit the shot that gave them the lead, but the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Washington Wizards 109-102 Friday night on the backs of three veterans.

Thaddeus Young scored 29 points, Evan Turner had 23 and Spencer Hawes chipped in 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Sixers rallied from 14 down to improve to 2-0 for the first time in seven years.

Carter-Williams, after his record-setting debut Wednesday in Philadelphia's shocking win over the Miami Heat, had 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and one steal in this one.

John Wall scored 26 points to lead the Wizards in their home opener, but had just three in the second half.

The Sixers shot 60.4 percent after halftime, nearly 16 points better than the Wizards.

"I think it was similar to the way we won against Miami -- the group's ability to stay together and just run, run, run, and run late in the game," said Sixers coach Brett Brown.

"I think it helped us find a way to win, getting great defensive efforts and scoring out of it."

Tony Wroten tied the game with a three-point play and Carter-Williams hit a 3 from the high left side midway through the fourth quarter for Philadelphia's first lead at 92-89.

Later, Hawes knocked down a 3 from the point and then found Young with a nice touch pass underneath to make it 101-92. Washington cut it to three late, but Young muscled up a tough layup and Hawes scored after an inbounds pass as the Sixers closed the game on a 4-0 burst.

The teams will meet again next Wednesday in Philadelphia.

Wall was 6-of-6 for 15 points in the first quarter and 9-of-13 in the first half, but made just one of his six shots after that. Martell Webster had 13 points off the bench and Trevor Ariza scored 12 with 14 rebounds for the Wizards, who fell to 0-2.

Washington, which lost at Detroit on Wednesday, has dropped at least its first two games for the fourth season in a row.

"They scored 65 points in the second half, so we didn't do a great job of finishing," said Wall. "It's embarrassing to lose your home opener when you had a great chance of doing it."

No. 3 draft pick Otto Porter remained out for the Wizards because of a right hip flexor injury, but one of Philadelphia's prized rookies had another chance to learn playing against Washington guards Wall and Bradley Beal, who scored 10.

Wednesday against the two-time reigning champion Heat, Carter-Williams stirred the Sixers to a 19-0 game-opening run and ended with an NBA debut-record nine steals to go with 22 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds.

It was a stat line seldom seen in the NBA from a player with any level of tenure, leading Magic Johnson to tweet he had just watched the Rookie of the Year play.

"He doesn't get fazed by the moment and he feels the responsibility to get our veterans through that," said Brown. "That's a rare quality for a rookie and he has that."

Wall's 23 first-half points sparked the Wizards to a 54-44 lead at the break.

After Philadelphia trailed by as many as 14 in the first half and 12 in the third quarter, Carter-Williams had a chance to tie the game after drawing a blocking foul on Wall in the lane, but he missed both free throws.

Instead, Darius Morris dribbled the length of the court for a layup to tie it for the Sixers at 72-72, capping a 16-4 run, and it was 74-74 going into the fourth.

Earlier, Wall scored 10 straight points -- including two after he stole the ball for a dunk -- to stretch Washington's lead to 17-6 midway through the first quarter.

He made all six of his shots and both of his free throws for 15 points in the quarter and the Wizards led 33-21 going into the second after shooting 54.2 percent.

Wall stopped a 10-1 Sixers run with a runner and Bradley Beal later knocked down a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 Wizards surge after the Sixers had pulled within two.

Young had 13 points and Turner scored 11 to lead the Sixers in the half.

Game Notes

The Sixers went 3-0 to start the 2006-07 season. They will start a four-game homestand Saturday against the Chicago Bulls ... The Wizards play at Miami on Sunday.
