Cavs can Brown, name Griffin full-time GM

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Mike Brown's second tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers has lasted just one season, as the well-traveled head coach was relieved of his duties on the same day the team announced David Griffin as its new general manager.

Brown, who previously served as the Cavaliers' head coach for five seasons from 2005-10, went just 33-49 in his return to the organization amidst raised expectations.

"This is a very tough business. It pains all of us here that we needed to make the difficult decision of releasing Mike Brown," said owner Dan Gilbert. "Mike worked hard over this last season to move our team in the right direction. Although there was some progress from our finish over the few prior seasons, we believe we need to head in a different direction. We wish Mike and his family nothing but the best."

Brown's lifetime record with the organization was 305-187. His best season behind the bench came in 2006-07, when he helped guide a LeBron James-led Cleveland squad to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. The Cavs were swept by the Spurs.

In 2009, Brown was named NBA Coach of the Year and became the fourth-youngest coach in NBA history to win 60 games. He directed the Cavs to back-to-back 60- plus win seasons in both 2008-09 and 2009-10, but was fired in May of 2010 after losing to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Brown then took over as the Los Angeles Lakers' head coach for the 2011-12 season. The Lakers went 41-25 in the lockout-shortened campaign and made it to the Western Conference semifinals.

The 44-year-old was let go by Los Angeles just five games into the following season, however, after the team got off to a 1-4 start.

Griffin had been Cleveland's acting GM since Gilbert fired Chris Grant on Feb. 6. The team went 17-16 to close out the regular season following his appointment.

He joined the Cavaliers as vice president of basketball operations in September of 2010. Prior to coming to the franchise, Griffin spent 17 years with the Phoenix Suns while serving in various roles such as vice president of basketball operations, assistant general manager of player personnel, director of player personnel and assistant director of player personnel.

"Our ownership's commitment to this franchise and the fans of Cleveland is absolute," Griffin said. I feel that commitment, not only by the resources they make available but also with their tireless passion for delivering a championship-caliber team. Our entire organization reflects that passion and commitment. I am humbled and honored to be put in position to aggressively work with them, all of our front office staff and anyone who can contribute to achieving that vision."

Griffin is leading an immediate search for the team's new head coach. Cavs assistant coaches currently remain under contract for the upcoming season.
