NBA Preview from The Sports Network

Wednesday, January 1st (All times Eastern)

New Orleans Pelicans (14-15) at Minnesota Timberwolves (15-16), 8 p.m.

(SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves will try to shake off a tough loss when they get back to work Wednesday versus the New Orleans Pelicans at the Target Center.

The Timberwolves dropped a 100-98 decision to the Dallas Mavericks on Monday in the opener of a three-game homestand and Love thought he was fouled by Shawn Marion on a game-tying attempt. There was no foul called and Minnesota had its two-game winning streak come to an end.

The NBA reviewed the play and Rod Thorn, the league's President of Basketball Operations, issued a statement Tuesday saying that Marion committed a foul and Love should have been awarded two free throws with one second on the clock.

"I thought it was pretty obvious, just look at the replay," Love said after scoring 36 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. "If you look at the replay it was obvious that he got arm. I didn't know how to react. I couldn't yell at him (referee). That wasn't going to do anything, I just walked off the court with my head up."

Kevin Martin had 19 points, Nikola Pekovic added 18 and 10 rebounds and Corey Brewer scored 16 points for the Wolves. Ricky Rubio ended with four points, nine boards and 13 assists in defeat.

Meanwhile, Love registered his seventh straight double-double and league- leading 28th overall. He has scored 25 points or more in 11 consecutive games, averaging 31.2 ppg in that time.

The T'Wolves will also host Oklahoma City on the homestand and are 9-5 in the Twin Cities this season.

New Orleans will kick off a four-game road trip Wednesday against Minnesota, Boston, Indiana and Miami. It is 5-10 away from the Big Easy and has lost five of the last six games as the visitor.

The Pelicans, though, have won three of their last four games overall and posted a hard-fought 110-108 win over the mighty Portland Trail Blazers at home on Monday. Tyreke Evans hit the go-ahead jumper with 1.2 seconds left and finished with 20 points. Jrue Holiday filled the stat sheet with 31 points on 14-of-28 shooting to go along with 13 assists and seven rebounds.

Holiday scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.

"I was just being aggressive," Holiday said of his fourth quarter.

Anthony Davis ended with 27 points, 12 boards and five blocks, while Ryan Anderson chipped in 13 points for New Orleans, which shot 53.9 percent and had a 68-32 points in the paint advantage.

Pelicans guard Eric Gordon (hip) is questionable against the Timberwolves, who took three of four meetings in this series a season ago. New Orleans has won nine of its last 13 games at the Target Center.
