NC State focusing on scoring inside against Duke

Posted January 16, 2014

The book on Duke this season is clear and concise, beat the Blue Devils in the paint.

So if NC State hopes to break Duke’s 25 home-game winning streak, this will have to be an inside job.

“We definitely want to get in the interior and try to score inside,” said forward T.J. Warren. “They don’t really have any bigs so we want to utilize that and get in and score inside.”

“It’s a guard oriented team. They don’t really have any bigs like outside 6’ 8’’. Jabari [Parker] plays the four and he’s not really a four he’s like a three man,” said forward Lennard Freeman. “So I think the bigs need to show up. They’re going to have a big impact on this game cause they’re not that big.”

That need for aggressive play was underscored in State’s loss to Wake Forest. When foul troubles and a tight Wake zone took the interior away, State’s lead slipped away.

“Our bigs need to touch the ball more. Last night they collectively go 9-13 from the field, had 21 rebounds. And I think our perimeter players are at a point where they have to trust them just a little bit more,” said head coach Mark Gottfried.

“Oh yeah coach Gottfried said ‘just be aggressive'. We need more production out of the four freshmen bigs, just start being aggressive, don’t think about too much just try and be more aggressive,” said Freeman.

“For our team to develop into the best we can become our big guys have got to develop and we have got to get them the ball to help them on their way,” said Gottfried.

Duke tends not to play zone so State’s bigs will have plenty of chances to come up big.

I had the same issue, and I used the Feedback Button, and by late afternoon, the problem was fixed. I was surprised other people hadn't asked WRAL about the problem.

I tried several times to comment yesterday. I was beginning to think I was banned, but no one else was able to comment. I am not a coach, but it looks to me like we need some inside defense. I would put Annya in sooner to establish an inside presence.

After the heartbreaking (and wrong) loss to Wake, I wouldn't rule State out in this game. Other teams have played Duke tough in Cameron this year. Tall order, I know, but don't count the Pack out.
