NC State tops UMass, advances to final in Puerto Rico

The NC State Wolfpack advanced to the Puerto Rico Tip-Off final Friday with a 94-76 win over Umass.

Five Wolfpack players finished in double figures including TJ Warren with 21 and five rebounds. Lorenzo Brown notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. Richard Howell totaled 19 points and nine rebounds and Calvin Leslie finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

NC State 94-76; FINAL

TJ Warren is over 20 points off the bench and three of the five starters are in double-digits for the Wolfpack as NC State leads UMass by 24 late in the second half. 

Lorenzo Brown has 10 asists and is one point from a double-double. Howell needs three rebounds and CJ Leslie needs four to recah the benchmark as well. with 6:26 remaining.

NC State has continued to dominate their second round game in Puerto Rico as they lead 66-49 at the under-12 timeout of the second half.

Warren is up to 17 points to lead the Pack, Wood is at 15 and Howell at 13. Howell has also pulled down seven rebounds and the team has a 27-22 advantage on the boards.

Richard Howell has led NC State out of the break with the help of Lorenzo Brown and the Wolfpack lead has grown to 18 points, 53-35.

Scott Wood knocked down his fourth three-pointer of the first half as the clock struck zero and NC State opened up their halftime lead to 16 points.

TJ Warren has 13 points off the bench to go with four rebounds and two steals as he continues his hot start to the season. Rebounding from last night, Lorenzo Brown has seven first-half assists and Rodney Purvis has eight first-half points.

NC State 48-32; HALF

Foul trouble has crept its way onto the NC State stat sheet as six different players have accrued fouls including two by Purvis and Wood. A slow third segment has allowed the Pack to maintain a 10-pint lead at the under  four timeout.

NC State 36-26:3:44 1st

Rodney Purvis is 3-for-3 from the field and is leading NC State with eight points as NC State's lead has grown to eight at the under eight timeout.

TJ Warren, who set career highs in most every category last night has five points off the bench. CJ Leslie and Richard Howell have each chipped in six points and NC State has out-rebounded UMass 12-7 in the early going.

NC State 30-22; 7:58 1st

UMass came out of the first timeout  with pace and narrowed the gap to four points,but CJ Leslie stepped up with six points and the Pack continue to lead after the second media timeout.

NC State 24-16; 10:05 1st

Rodney Purvis is 2-for-2 from the field including a 3-pointer and Scott Wood has knocked down a triple as his only shot and NC State leads UMass 12-5 at the first media time out.

CJ Leslie and Richard Howell also have a bucket apiece as the Pack are shooting 5-for-10 in the early going.

    In all, they looked the best I have seen them in 24 + years. That said....Do not let that go to your head boys! The moment you do you are done. This coach is one of the best I have seen.... Do not let up,..make them improve without destroying innate skill......We will see if you, the team, can get this done. I have faith in your ability, have faith in yourselves, have faith in each other.

    Things keep getting better for State. With Beejay Anya's selection of NC State today, the Wolfpack a Top 5 point guard, Top 3 center and Top 15 power forward for the 2013 class on top of the group of freshman that are already shining their first few games on the court.
