Howell, NC State hold off UNC-A, 82-80

Posted November 23, 2012

FINAL: NC State 82, UNC-A 80

After trailing at the under-four timeout, NC State was able to get a late run courtesy of Richard Howell, who finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds, and the Wolfpack avoided an upset to UNC-Asheville Friday.

UNC-A 69, NC State 68; 3:16 2nd

Despite a sub-par performance for much of the night, NC State is within one at the final media timeout. UNC-A forward Jeremy Atkinson has been everything for the Bulldogs with 28 points.

UNC-A 64, NC State 62; 7:20 2nd

NC State is up to 18 turnovers, Richard Howell has a double-double. Balance of positive and negatives still have the Wolfpack down by two at the under-8 timeout.

UNC-A 56, NC State 53; 11:22 2nd

At the under 12 timeout, Jeremy Atkinson for UNC-A leads all scorers with 19 pointsand three Bulldogs are in double digits as they lead NC State, 56-53.

UNC-A 48, NC State 26; 15:34 2nd

Richard Howell is two rebounds shy of a double-double at the first TV timeout of the second half and is staying out of foul trouble, however, UNC-A is hanging tough and maintaining pace as they lead by two.

UNC-A 37, NC State 34; HALF

A Calvin Leslie bucket at the buzzer brought the Wolfpack to within three points at the break after a sloppy first half.

The Bulldogs' Jeremy Atkinson leads all scorers with 11 points. Turnovers are an issue both ways as NC State has 11, UNC-A has 10.

UNC-A 30, NC State 28; 3:09 1st

NC State is up to nine turnovers and the Bulldogs are winning both the points off turnovers and points in the paint battles as they lead 30-28 late in the first half.

NC State 22, UNC-A 22; 7:21 1st

Despite seven turnovers in the first 12 minutes, NC State is tied with UNC-Asheville 22-22. Wood and Howell lead the team with six points and foul trouble is not an issue as they have just three as a team.

UNC-A 18, NC State 17; 11:13 1st

Asheville is staying consistent with their offensive pace and pressure defense as they hold a slim lead on NC State at the second media timeout of the first half.

A Scott Wood 3-pointer brought the Wolfpack to within one and he leads the team with six points. The team also has six turnovers.

UNC-A 9, NC State 5; 15:48 1st

Add up a 2-for-6 start shooting and four turnovers for NC State and you get a 6-0 UNC-Asheveille lead. The Wolfpack have scored as of late, but the Bulldogs continue to hold a 9-5 lead early.

PREGAME:

Coming off their first loss of the season, the now 16th-ranked NC State Wolfpack return to Raleigh to take on instate foe UNC-Asheville on Friday at PNC Arena.

Mark Gottfried's Wolfpack were highly regarded coming into the 2012-13 season, ranked sixth in the nation to begin the year. The team certainly looked the part in its first three games, disposing of Miami-Ohio (97-59) at home and then Penn State (72-55) and Massachusetts (94-76) as part of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. However, the Wolfpack were unable to finish the job in Bayamon, getting routed themselves in the championship game by Oklahoma State, 76-56. N.C. State Logo More NCSU Stories

Eddie Biedenbach's Bulldogs have struggled out of the gate, beginning the 2012-13 season with just one win in their first five games. UNC-Asheville won its season-opener against Western Carolina (71-61), but has lost four straight since, including all three as part of the same tournament in Bayamon, with losses to Tennessee (75-68), Akron (81-63) and finally Providence (72-67).

NC State has won all 17 previous meetings with UNC-Asheville, including last year's season-opener, an 84-75 victory in Raleigh.

Despite forcing 20 turnovers and placing three Bulldogs in double-figure scoring, UNC-Asheville came up empty handed in its trip to Puerto Rico with a five-point loss to Providence in the final round of the event. The loss spoiled a solid performance by Trent Meyer from the perimeter and a strong outing by Jeremy Atkinson in the paint. Meyer led the team with 20 points, thanks in large part to four 3-pointers, while Atkinson recorded a double- double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Keith Hornsby got in the act offensively as well, chipping in 10 points in defeat.

Despite the loss, the scoring was a welcome site for a team that is netting just 65.6 ppg on the year, on a mere .421 shooting. Atkinson has been the go- to-guy in the early stages of the season, leading the way in both scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg). Meyer (10.0 ppg) is also in double figures, but while he leads the team with six 3-pointers, he has converted just 23.1 percent of the time from behind the arc (6-of-26). Hornsby (9.8 ppg) and D.J. Cunningham (9.2 ppg) provide some scoring depth.

The Wolfpack were humming along until they ran into the Cowboys last time out. NC State shot a season-low .421 from the floor overall, and endured foul trouble by its frontcourt leaders, as Richard Howell and C.J. Leslie both fouled out down the stretch. All-ACC guard Lorenzo Brown struggled as well, finishing the game with just six points, five rebounds and one assist. Freshmen Rodney Purvis and T.J. Warren led the way in defeat with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

It remains to be seen if the stunning loss to OSU will be an anomaly or not. Despite netting just 56 points, NC State is still averaging a healthy 79.8 ppg on the year, while delivering on 50.6 percent of its shots overall. The scoring pool is deep, with four players averaging double figures and two more on the cusp. The NC State gameplan runs through Brown, who is averaging 9.8 ppg, while doling out 5.5 apg. With a ton of veteran leadership, it is surprising to see a pair of freshmen atop the scoring list, as Warren (16.5 ppg) and Purvis (13.0 ppg) have made immediate impacts in Raleigh. Howell (12.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg) and Leslie (10.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) give the team more than enough frontcourt punch.

The Wolfpack just couldn't get it going against Oklahoma State and compounded the issue with four trouble. That isn't likely to happen very often to this team. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they will get a much sharper opponent in front of NC State's home crowd on Friday.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: NC State 83, UNC-Asheville 54

If NC State was a #6 team... The guros must be a tad dismal 3 weeks ago. It's showing up now. Not even in the top 25th of all teams. The 4th best team in the ACC right now. I hope Lutz can get them back on track.

  • Hokies94 Nov 23, 9:34 p.m.

NC State won tonight with rebounds. 34-19. Asheville beat them in FT's, and some cat's. This should have won the game for UNC-A. UNC-A shot 42% from the 3 ball, and State shot 33%. Rebounds and second shots won this for State. One possession could have sealed it for UNC-Asheville. State should fall below the top 25 teams. Not all that impressive. UNC, Duke, FSU, MD, are better than the top pick in the ACC. Hype is just that. Not much.

behind UNC and Duke, we have been the best team in the ACC. I have no idea what school you root for, but I will assume it is NC State. We have owned NC State over the last 15 years in basketball. You thinking this has ANYTHING to do with not being able to compete in ACC basketball just shows you have no idea.

looks like State is going to escape at home vs UNC-A. #6 team my rear end.

Laugh away clown. Gott has serious problems with his girls. A team that beats UNC-A at home by only 2 points would lose to Butler by 25.
