NC State officially announces signing of Freeman

Posted May 1, 2013

Mark Gottfried made the signing of Oak Hill forward Lennard Freeman official Wednesday, marking the fifth big name recruit to join the Wolfpack for the 2013-14 season.

Freeman, a 6-foot-8, 235-pounder known for his rebounding and defense, verbally committed to NC State last week.

“We are very excited about adding Lennard,” Gottfried said in a statement. “He is the ultimate team player and wants to win. He is a player I feel can develop in our system. He has been well coached, and will be a great teammate as well.”

Freeman will already be comfortable with at least one other NC State newcomer. He and committed recruit BeeJay Anaya were AAU teammates and played together in last month’s Capital Classic All-Star Game.

NC State also has commitments from JUCO All-American guard Desmond Lee, McDonald’s All-American Anthony Barber and 6-foot-9 Kyle Washington who is listed as a 4-star recruit on Rivals.com.

The five-man class for NC State was paramount after Lorenzo Brown and CJ Leslie announced they would be leaving for the NBA, Rodney Purvis decided to transfer and Scott Wood and Richard Howell were lost to graduation. The only returning Wolfpack player that made more than two starts a year ago will be TJ Warren.

Don't forget that DeShawn Painter was a 3 star recruit (Rivals, 2009) at #127, 6 spots ahead of another 3 star, Scott Wood (#133).

Looking at his offer list tells me all I need to know. I mainly laugh at WRAL calling him a "big name". Which is fine. State needs bodies, so its good for them.

He has the size. I don't know much about him other than he is a 3 star. I'm sure VT could use him.

If he had signed with UNC...Carolina fans would say. "Good get...need these type players...he is underrated...". Don't forget...UNC was preseason number 11 in AP poll last year..finished unranked.

Anytime your adding a player in may you're pulling rabbits out of your hat. Not many players still available at this time and your competing against several teams for a few available players.

As for Gottfried's coaching skills, yes those are still remain to be seen the extend of this skills but I believe we will find out more next year. There are several things you can blame last year on, we'll see if the coach can take a huge part of that blame or does the blame falls more on the players. But I think 5 years is enough time to determine that, 3 years to go.

Sad really to hype this up. He is a 3 star kid and look at his offers. This is a good player that may develop and fills a need but acting like Gott pulled a rabbit out of a hat is funny as hell.

Hoping you didn't bet any money on that. Love the hype over a good player but not great. Cat Barber ain't going to qualify unless they put him on the Rodney Purvis clearance program.

Too bad Gott lacks in coaching skills or this would be a great recruit.
