— North Carolina State running back Shadrach Thornton was given a deferred prosecution ruling Thursday at his court appearance for a charge of assault on a female.

Thornton will undergo monitored counseling and could have the charges dropped upon completion. The court will check in on his counseling status every three months beginning Oct. 2.

Thornton was arrested June 6 on campus following an incident the day before. Witnesses told police that they saw the sophomore grab his girlfriend by the arm and push her against the wall in the D.H. Hill Library. He was charged with one count of assault on a female.

Thornton, the leading rusher for NC State a year ago, has been suspended for the team's season opener against Louisiana Tech by first-year head coach Dave Doeren. He has worked out with the team for the entirety of the fall practice session and was made available on the Wolfpack's media day.

Thornton amassed with 694 yards as a freshman while starting just four games. The Hinesville, Ga., native did not play in any of the team's first three games a year ago and fumble issues had him in a backup role as the Wolfpack entered their spring game this season.

The Wolfpack have five scholarship tailbacks on the roster in Tony Creecy, Thornton and three true freshmen – Matthew Dayes, Josh Mercer and Dakwa Nichols.

Guess he must have a good lawyer or gotten special consideration since he's a NCSU football player. Kind of like PJ got. I guess it works the same at both schools.

Did this happen in one of those "UNC-Owned" courtrooms we hear so much about from the Abc'ers?

Deferred until after football season is well underway. What a crock

UNC football player's Travis Hughes, Eric Ebron, Dan Mastromatteo, Jack Tabb, and Josh Broach all have pending charges according to courts records yet its gone unreported by the local media? My, my, my. Could this be aggie cheats.

I'm sure the fact that his girlfriend, who was the one allegedly assaulted, has gone on twitter stating that she wasn't assaulted, had nothing to do with the deferment.

What it means is if he successfully completes the anger management classes and has no other issues, the charges will be dropped. For a first time offender and misdemeanor charge, this is not at all uncommon nor special treatment. People in the judicial profession tell me this is the normal ruling in such cases. I only have two defense attorneys and one assistant DA in my family so I am basing my comments on their expertise, not my own.

PJ should have had his charges dismissed. First time offender with a small amount of weed (which ought to be legal anyway) and he forgot to have his driver's license with him. I have no problem with that. Driving a car rented for him by Fats, while not illegal does raise NCAA questions, but that's a different arguement.

Assault, especially assualt on a female, is a serious problem that should be dealt with swiftly.

    Thornton's girlfriend didn't press charges? That's interesting.

Think she may have been "convinced" not to press charges? I do. If a worker in the library was concerned enough to call the cops, I'd say something happened. And if this is what Thornton does in a public library, I wonder what goes on when they're alone. I know, that's speculation.

Thornton's "counseling" sounds kinds like PJ's drug class. Apples and oranges, I know. Still shows a trend of athletes not being held accountable for their actions.
