NC State's Rodon named USA Baseball's Player of the Year

Posted October 29, 2013

Another summer down, another season of supremacy for NC State pitcher Carlos Rodon in a Team USA jersey. Now the debate begins over the lefty's fall workload.

— NC State pitcher Carlos Rodon was named USA Baseball's Richard W. "Dick" Case Player of the Year Tuesday, joining the likes of Stephen Strasburg and Ryan Zimmerman.

The award is given annually to USA Baseball's top player while honoring the memory of the organization's founding executive director and CEO.

Rodon, a Holly Springs native, led the Wolfpack to the College World Series in 2013, and played on the USA Collegiate National Team for his second year in a row. He became the first ever NC State player to win the Richard W. "Dick" Case Award.

"Carlos Rodon's performance this summer speaks for itself," said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball's Executive Director/CEO. "It's fitting he joins a group of past recipients that includes Stephen Strasburg and Huston Street."

The staff ace of the CNT that hosted, and swept, the Cuban National Team, Rodon went 3-0, not allowing a run in 17 innings on the mound. He struck out 21 batters while walking four, allowing five hits in four starts.

The sophomore lefty shut-out the Cuban lineup for 6 2/3 innings while striking out 11 in a two-hit performance at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. In two years with Team USA, Rodon has gone 5-0 in nine appearances, striking out 42 batters with a 0.75 ERA over 36 innings.

Thought of to be a sure-1st-round draft pick, Rodon went 10-3 last season for NC State and set the school record with 184 strikeouts in 132.1 innings.

Rodon will be honored on Nov. 2 at Carter-Finley Stadium during NC State's football game against North Carolina.

I join the rest of my Carolina supporters and alum in congratulating Rodon. He is indeed an awesome talent. And we've had many such talents in the ACC so he is indeed in good company.

Congrats. Should be the number one pitcher in the draft, if not the number one player taken.

He's a heck of a pitcher and he totally deserves the award. Let's hope he stays healthy and has a long career in the majors!
