— North Carolina State University sophomore running back Shadrach Thornton is being investigated in connection with a sexual battery, according to a search warrant.

Detectives said they went to Thornton’s apartment Wednesday to follow up on a sexual battery case that was reported Monday to the NCSU Police Department. Detectives knocked on Thornton’s door at College Inn apartments, at 2717 Western Blvd., in Raleigh, and smelled marijuana, according to the warrant.

Marchez Coates, also an NC State football player, answered the door and gave the two detectives permission to enter the apartment where they found “several marijuana stems and a partial marijuana cigarette lying on the kitchen table,” the warrant stated.

Thornton has not been charged in the sexual battery investigation but does face misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Thornton’s roommate, Jamor (J.J.) Jones, a safety on the football team, also faces the same charges. A statement from the school Thursday indicated that he had told the coaching staff prior to the incident that he had planned to transfer.

"The NC State Athletics Department takes any allegation of illegal activity very seriously," the school stated in a release. "We have university and athletic policies and procedures in place regarding our expectations of conduct for our students. Coach Doeren has suspended Shadrach Thornton indefinitely."

According to the warrant, seized items include: two marijuana cigarettes, marijuana stems and a grinder in the common area; three marijuana cigarettes and 0.3 grams of marijuana in Thornton’s bedroom; and a pill bottle containing five 500mg Naproxen (a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory medication) in Jones’ bedroom , although the prescription was not in his name.

Wolfpack cornerback Juston Burris is listed as a fourth roomate at the apartment. Neither Burris nor Coates face any charges.

Maj. David Kelly of the NCSU Police Dept. declined to comment on the sexual battery case saying it was an ongoing investigation.

Thornton was arrested June 6 on charges of assaulting a female after witnesses alleged he and his girlfriend were involved in a physical altercation in the D.H. Hill Library. Thornton was given a deferred prosecution ruling in that case so he could undergo monitored counseling.

Thornton has led NC State in rushing each of the last two seasons despite playing a limited role as a freshman and being held out due to suspension for the first two games this year. He has amassed 1,462 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns in 20 career games with the Wolfpack.

Marijuana charge no big deal. Sexual battery not so good, but he hasn't been charged yet.

Don't you have an imaginary class you should be pretending to take? UNC is the last school that needs to be casting stones.

Not sure of the evidence on the sexual battery case, but from this story it looks like the DA will have a constructive possession issue with the marijuana charge if he was not there, so that may be tough to prove.

This should quiet the Woofies who live to trash UNC -- but of course it won't.

My advice to Tar Heel fans is to keep your mouths shut. Don't say a word.

On both sides, those who live in glass jail cells shouldn't throw stones.

That's probably the only hole he hit all season.
