NC State students react to Gottfried firing

Raleigh, N.C. — Just a few weeks ago, Coach Mark Gottfried and his team were greeted as heroes.
Students celebrated through campus just after the Wolfpack win over Duke a few weeks ago. Student Carl Hiltbrunner was in the crowd.
“We were talking about how that would be such a huge turn for our team,” he said. “That was going to be the energy to get us going and then we go and have six straight losses.”
The feelings were much different Thursday. Many North Carolina State University students agreed with the decision to part ways with Coach Gottfried.
“Little sad to see him go, but mostly excited,” said student Ethan Williams.
“I think it was a great decision, or a good decision to fire him,” student Lane Willis said.
But the coach isn't leaving right away. He will finish out the season with his players. Some students on campus question that part of the decision.
“It’s going to be really awkward,” student Nick Orman said. “If you’re going to fire him, wait until the end of the season.”
“Apparently it was on his request that he be allowed to do this,” Adam Gold said. “It probably is better for him, so maybe these questions will stop, the speculation will stop.”
“I have nothing but respect for the way he has handled it.”
Gold said the search for a new coach will be interesting to follow and that the next person in line should be ready to rebuild the program.
