NC State sweeps Coastal, runs streak to five

Posted May 4

— NC State baseball knocked off Coastal Carolina 8-4 on Sunday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park, behind Trea Turner’s near cycle and Jake Armstrong’s go-ahead homer in the bottom of the eighth.

The Wolfpack (27-19) needed a pair of comebacks to complete its sweep of the Chanticleers (22-26) after falling behind 2-0 in the first. The Pack answered with Turner’s solo shot in the bottom half, and tied the game 2-2 in the fourth, before taking a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Coastal rallied to knot the score 3-3 in the sixth and took a 4-3 lead in the eighth, until Armstrong’s two-run shot put State ahead for good. The Pack scored thrice more to set the final at 8-4.

Turner put an exclamation point on one of the most dynamic individual weekends in program history by threatening to submit the Wolfpack’s first cycle since 2006. The junior finished 3-for-4 with his seventh homer of the season, a triple, three runs, one RBI, an intentional walk, and his 21st stolen base of the year.

For the weekend, Turner hit .818 (9-for-11) with 11 runs, three RBIs, four walks, six stolen bases, a double, a triple, and a home run. Turner was not retired a single time in his first 10 plate appearances of the series. He finished the three-game set slugging 1.364 with an .867 on-base percentage.

Armstrong’s two-run bomb was his fourth of the year in a 1-for-2 day with two RBIs, a run, and two walks. Brett Austin hit his 10th double of the year in a 2-for-4 outing. Jake Fincher contributed a 2-for-4 ballgame as well. Andrew Knizner drove in a pair to finish the weekend with a team-leading nine RBIs. Chance Shepard scored twice in a 1-for-4 day. Preston Palmeiro and Logan Ratledge each scored once with Ratledge adding an RBI.

Brad Stone (4-2) collected the win in relief, holding the Chants to one earned in 2 1/3. Starter Patrick Peterson worked the first 4 1/3, limiting Coastal to three hits and two runs, one earned. Joe O’Donnell relieved him and went the next 1 1/3 without allowing a hit. Stone entered next before Jon Olczak and Cody Beckman combined for a scoreless ninth. Beckman earns his second save in as many outings.

Facing a 2-0 deficit, Turner led off the Wolfpack first with his solo shot to left. In the fourth, Shepard reached on a walk, went to second on a fielder’s choice, then advanced to third and home on a pair of wild pitches. The scoring play came on a dropped third strike with two away. Tied 2-2, the Pack took its first lead in the fifth. Turner did it himself, reaching as the leadoff on a bunt single, stealing second, moving to third on a groundout, and scoring on a wild pitch.

Coastal tied the game 3-3 in the sixth, and opened up a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Shepard started the game-winning rally with a single to center. Armstrong followed him by pasting a two-run blast down the left field foul line. Palmeiro knocked a one-out single through the right side to keep the momentum going. Coastal elected to intentionally walk Turner with two down and first base open, then Ratledge singled to score Palmeiro. Knizner drilled a two-RBI single into left to score Ratledge and Turner, setting the final at 8-4.

NC State returns to action on Wednesday, May 7 at 6 p.m. to host Richmond on ESPN3 in the final midweek home game of the regular season.

Since the powers that be at WRAL don't have anything on today's Richmond game yet, I can tell you that the winning streak is over - Richmond won 7 - 4 as State used 7 pitchers and State was never in the lead in this one. Guess they were going through the motions with Richmond while looking ahead to the Wake Forest series this weekend.
