PREGAME

Both the NC State Wolfpack and Miami Hurricanes are coming off losses in Atlantic Coast Conference play, and will try to rebound as they clash in a conference showdown at the BankUnited Center.

NC State had won three in a row prior to an 84-70 loss at North Carolina last Saturday. The Wolfpack slipped back to 4-5 in ACC play this season, and sit five games back of Syracuse for the conference lead.

Miami broke up a three-game losing streak with a non-conference win over Norfolk State last Saturday, but jumped back in the loss column with a defeat at the hands of Pittsburgh, 59-55, in overtime Wednesday. The Hurricanes fell to 2-7 in ACC play this season.

NC State leads the all-time series with Miami, 9-5. The two programs will meet up again later this season in Raleigh on March 1.

North Carolina jumped ahead of NC State 40-23 at the end of the first half in last Saturday's contest, which proved to be too great of a lead for the Wolfpack to overcome. Although the Wolfpack shot 65.4 percent in the second period, the Tar Heels still managed to hold on for the win. T.J. Warren led NC State with 21 points in the contest, adding eight rebounds to his stat line. Desmond Lee chipped in 18 points, and Anthony Barber added 12. NC State shot a dismal 25 percent in the first half of the game.

Warren tops the Wolfpack this season in scoring, and is one of the top scorers in the ACC with a 22.4 ppg average on 51.5 percent shooting from the floor. Warren is also the team's leader in rebounding at 7.3 rpg, and in steals with 34. Barber is second in scoring this season at 10.8 ppg, followed closely by Lee at 10.5 ppg. Barber leads the team with 89 assists on the year with just 44 turnovers. The Wolfpack are averaging 71.9 ppg this season.

Pittsburgh took a one-point lead into the locker room over Miami in Wednesday's ACC clash, and both teams went south offensively in the second half. Miami outscored Pitt, 18-17, in the second half to force overtime, where the Panthers prevailed. Rion Brown led the Hurricanes with 21 points, and Garrius Adams tallied 10 in the losing effort.

Brown has proven to be the best scorer for the 'Canes this season, as the only player averaging double-digit scoring totals. Brown nets 14.3 ppg this season on 43.2 percent shooting from the floor. Adams isn't too far off the double- digit point total average at 9.8 ppg. He tops the Hurricanes in assists with 62 on the year, and Donnavan Kirk is tops in rebounding at 6.1 rpg. The 'Canes are scoring an average of just 61.3 ppg through 22 games played.

Miami seems to have plenty of issues on the offensive end, having turned the ball over 240 times on the season, equal to the number of assists the team has racked up. The Wolfpack should be able to score at will, even on the road.

    Where is everyone?

Congrats to Miami. You play ugly. You make your opponent play ugly. That's how you have to win this year. I think we were fortunate today.

BTW, when did fouls become "faults"? And TJ's last name is "Warner"?

  • GunnyGoesArrrgh Feb 8, 4:14 p.m.

Whew - good job State, or should I say Cardiac Pack.

Gutting out a win like this makes me think State will be dancing in March.

State has played most of its tougher games, and I think their schedule heading down the stretch is very favorable for State to win enough of those games to make the Tourney.

"Gutting out a win" is a good description. I can't recall one like this. Had Lee just held that ball with 10 seconds and a 3 point lead we wouldn't have had such a gut check. Oh well, they are young. I'm guessing it will take some more wins and a good showing in the tournament to get into the NCAA.

The ARE young, but they are tough, and they don't give up, as evidenced by today's game and look at how they played in the second half at Chapel Hill. Agree it will take more wins, but State's already played the tougher part of their schedule, so those wins will most likely be attainable.

  • CarolinaBlue Feb 8, 5:47 p.m.

How about that no-call at the end when the State player decked the guy trying to shoot a half-court shot??

It ain't being young. It's being coached by Gottfried. No smarts.
