NC State women fall to Florida, 66-64

Posted November 23, 2012

— The NC State women's basketball team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten after a 66-64 loss to Florida at the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout at South Point Arena.

Leading by two with 20 seconds to play, NC State (4-1) left the Gators' Carlie Needles open in the corner and she drained her second three-pointer in the game's final 65 seconds for a 65-64 lead. Sydney Moss added a free throw with 0.9 seconds left to give UF a two-point win.

Neither team led by more than five points the entire second half, State took its largest lead of the game, 54-49, after a layup from Markeisha Gatling (eight points) with 5:51 to go. The Wolfpack would maintain its lead for the next couple minutes until a Sydney Moss (15 points) layup swung the lead back to Florida (4-1) with 3:01 to play.

UF still led by one when senior guard Marissa Kastanek (eight points) drained a high-arcing three-pointer with 1:40 to go for a 61-59 Wolfpack advantage.

Needles answered at the other end with a three, but Gatling's put back put State ahead 63-62 with 45 seconds left. The Pack got a stop at the other end, and had its best free throw shooter at the line in Kastanek, but she only made the first of two from the stripe to lead 64-62.

Needles answered with her third trifecta, this time the game winner for the Gators.

NC State junior forward Kody Burke had another monster game, notching her second double-double of the year with 21 points, on 9-of-13 shooting, and 13 rebounds. Her three-pointer at the 6:40 mark of the second half gave the Pack its largest advantage of the game to that point, 52-49.

Sophomore guard Krystal Barrett tied her season-best with 11 points for the Wolfpack.

A sluggish start to the game allowed Florida to take a 22-14 lead at the 8:06 mark of the first half. Breezy Williams got the ship righted for NC State with a jumper, and by the time Burke added a layup at 4:16 the game was tied 24-all.

The game was tied two more times in the opening half, before Barrett's layup would give State a 30-29 at the intermission.
