NC State women fall to Virginia

Posted January 13, 2013

— Kody Burke and Marissa Kastanek combined for 36 points for the NC State women's basketball team in a 78-59 loss at Virginia from John Paul Jones Arena Sunday afternoon.

Burke had a team-leading 19 points, her seventh-consecutive game in double figures, and eight rebounds, while Kastanek made a season-high five three-pointers on her way to 17 points.

Kelsey Wolfe paced Virginia (11-5, 3-2 ACC) with 24 points, while Telia McCall and Ataira Franklin each had 15 points, and China Crosby had 10 points.

After NC State (8-9, 0-5 ACC) led the entire first half, the lead changed hands five times in the first four minutes out of halftime. Virginia grabbed the lead, 38-37, on a jumper from Franklin at the 16:53 mark, and grew its lead to 49-39, but State scored 12 of the next 14 points to tie the game 51-all after two Burke free throws at 10:26.

However, for State, Burke picked up four fouls in the first 10 minutes of the second half and that forced Kellie Harper to pick and choose when to use her the rest of the game. With Burke out, Virginia scored the next 12 points for a 63-51 lead with under six minutes left.

Burke ended a five minute, 20 second scoring drought with a three-pointer from the top of the arc at 5:06, but the Pack was down 63-54. Kiana Evans scored on the next possession to get to within seven points with 4:36 left, but that was the closest the visitors would get as Virginia pulled away in the final minutes.

Kastanek put the Wolfpack up 8-2 in the first two minutes, 20 seconds of the game with a pair of three-pointers from the wing.

Wolfe, who kept Virginia in the game with 13 first-half points, cut her clubs deficit to 21-17, before Burke scored on three-straight possessions to open up a 27-17 Wolfpack lead, forcing Virginia to call its second timeout of the half at 6:40 mark.

Out of the timeout, Wolfe connected again, this time from the baseline, but Kastanek answered by hitting her third three-ball of the first half to extend the lead to 30-19 with less than six minutes until halftime.

Burke made another shot to give NC State its largest lead of the opening half, 32-19, but that wound up the last made field goal of the stanza for the Pack. Virginia got back in the game after State missed its last six shots from the floor and two free throws in the final 5:17 of the half.

Burke had 12 points by intermission, while Kastanek added 11 points.

NC State visits Maryland Thursday for an 8:30 p.m., tip on College Park, Md., on the Regional Sports Network.
