Game Blog: NC Central defeats NC State 82-72 in overtime

FINAL: NC Central took an 82-72 win over NC State in overtime.

1:29 overtime; NC State 74, NC Central 63: NC State has not scored since the start of overtime as NC Central is on a 11-0 run.

End of regulation; NC State 63, NC Central 63: NC State's Patrick Wallace hits a 3-pointer to tie the game at 63 with 2.7 seconds left in the game.

1:30 second half; NC Central 59, NC State 53: The Wolfpack tied it again at 53 but the Eagles fought back with the help of a few Wolfpack fouls. 

5:51 second half; NC Central 53, NC State 46: After NC State tied it up at 46 all, NC Central fired off seven points to give them a 53-46 lead and force NC State head coach Mark Gottfried to call a timeout. 

9:48 second half; NC Central 46, NC State 44: TJ Warren brings it within two points at 44-42 after a short jumper, but he's tagged with his fourth foul on the other end and is forced to sit. A flashy lay-up by Cat Barber forces a timeout.

15:39 second half; NC Central 37, NC State 33: Desmond Lee came out of the half and answered a quick Emanuel Chapman basket. NC Central is continuing to stay ahead of the Wolfpack 37-33.

Halftime: NC Central 33, NC State 27: After a 7-0 start, NC State has struggled to get inside and score. The Pack trail NC Central at the half and are face foul trouble in the second half. TJ Warren and Ralston Turner each have three fouls, Beejay Anya and Tyler Lewis have two.

7:54 first half; NC Central 16, NC State 14: The Eagles have taken the lead mid-way through the first half, taking it to the rim against NC State. Emanuel Chapman leads the Eagles with 6 points. TJ Warren leads the Pack with 5.

11:15 first half; NC State 9, NC Central 8: NC Central has fought back from a 7-0 deficit to come within one point of the Wolfpack. Eagles Alfonzo Houston leads the team with four points.

16:12 first half; NC State 7, NC Central 0: NC State's Tyler Lewis hits the first points of the game as the shot clock expires two and half minutes into play. The basket sparks a 7-0 Pack run and NCCU head coach Levelle Moton calls a timeout.

NC State and NC Central face-off at the PNC Arena as both look to improve to 3-1. 


Pregame: NC State men's basketball will host fellow Triangle school NC Central Wednesda at PNC Arena. The game, slated to begin at 7 p.m., will be shown on Fox Sports South. 

NC State (2-1) enters the contest coming off an 81-66 win over Campbell last Saturday evening. T.J. Warren, State's leading scorer and rebounder, led the team with 23 points. Tyler Lewis recorded career highs in assists (9) and rebounds (8) while committing just one turnover. The win was the team's sixth straight at home, dating back to last season.

NC Central also sports a 2-1 record after a convincing 62-43 win at Campbell on Monday night. NCCU is led by Jeremy Ingram, who averages 25.7 points per game. Ingram scored 27 points at Cincinnati, 21 in a blowout win over Johnson & Wales and 29 against Campbell.

NC State is 4-0 all-time against NC Central, part of the Pack's 29-0 all-time mark against schools from the MEAC. State boasts an average victory margin of 23.3 in the series, but the last meeting was relatively close. NC State held off NCCU for a 65-60 win in December 2011.

Following Wednesday's contest against NCCU, NC State will play Tuesday, Nov. 26 against 2013 NCAA Sweet 16 squad Florida Gulf Coast.

1. NONLEAGUE, OUR STATE
Dating back to 2008, NC State is 18-1 against nonleague opponents from North Carolina. That includes three wins over Wednesday's opponent, NC Central. The Wolfpack boasts a flawless 9-0 mark under Mark Gottfried against non-conference NC schools.

2. COMMON OPPONENTS
During this season-opening Global Games Shootout, NC State and NC Central can look at some data against two common opponents. Both teams have played against Cincinnati and Campbell (NC Central played at Campbell on Monday night): Here's how NC State and NC Central stack up against those two teams:

Sophomore forward T.J. Warren, a 2013 ACC All-Freshmen Team pick, stands fifth in the ACC with 21.0 points per game. Known for his scoring efficiency, the 6-8 sophomore has picked up his game in other areas. In addition to averaging 21.0 points per contest, Warren leads the team with 7.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. In the season opener, he shot 13-for-20 from the floor to score 27 points with eight rebounds. At Cincinnati, Warren posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, his third career double-double. Warren then scored 23 points on 10-for-20 shooting vs. Campbell.

4. THE 11TH MONTH
NC State almost never loses nonconference home games in the month of November. The Wolfpack is 15-2 in such contests dating back to November 2008. Gottfried started 4-1 in November non-league games at home during his first year at NC State and then went 2-0 last year. NCSU's last nonconference home loss in the opening month of the season came against Indiana (86-75 on Nov. 30, 2011). Overall, NC State is 56-12 (.824) during the month of November since 1999.

5. DEFENDING RALEIGH
NC State, now 2-0 at home this season, was 16-1 at home last season (15-1 at PNC Arena). Mark Gottfried is 31-7 in home games as head coach of the Wolfpack. NC State has won six straight games at home dating back to last season's loss vs. No. 14 Miami.

    YOWIE, YOWIE , YOWIE,,,Doesn't someone else want HOWIE..Football and Basketball selection. YOWIE,,,Then coach A was on her hit list..Only positive on coaching staff.YOWIE will have some great news next week in that she is excited about selecting coach dolittle from no where to a multi millon dollar contract to coach a new shuffle board program..YOWIE is really excited about this with the wolflpack nation loosing confidence in her as litte ad....

    Losing to Belmont, a team that has made the NCAA Tournament each of the past 3 seasons, is bad. Losing to NC Central is MONUMENTAL.
