Triangle football players present at Sugar Bowl

Posted January 2, 2014

NC State tight end Asa Watson participates in a youth gootball clinic in New Orleans Jan. 1, 2014.

Four college football players from the Triangle will be on the field Thursday for the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

North Carolina State University senior tight end Asa Watson and Duke redshirt senior offensive guard Dave Harding are members of the of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and will be recognized for their work during the bowl game's halftime show.

Watson is getting the honor for his work at a youth football clinic in New Orleans. Harding organized a mission trip for his fellow Duke offensive linemen to Ethiopia in the summer of 2012 where the group dug freshwater wells in a remote village.

Eleven players from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and 11 from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) or Divisions II, III or NAIA – who have positively impacted their communities and the lives of others through service were named to the Good Works Team.

North Carolina Central University quarterback Jordan Reid and Elon University defensive back Miles Williams will also be a part of the group honored at halftime of Thursday's game.

Wake Forest team dances in Orange Bowl

The Triangle will also be represented in the Orange Bowl. The Dance Attic, of Wake Forest, sent 64 dancers to do a choreographed number alongside country singer Dierks Bentley during his halftime performance.

They got rings, but the rings say "Only lost to 2013 Coastal Division Champions by 2"...

Did you guys make rings again this year for placing in your division?

  • sportznutV2.1 Jan 2, 2014

This will be the closest any State player gets to a bowl this year

Haters gonna hate. Try getting a life. You are nothing but an ABCer! How about saying something nice about Asa. I think it is great that he is being honored! Sounds like a really good guy.

Eric Ebronics should be recognized for pronouncing "football" correctly. So what if he can't read.

  • UpChuck Jan 2, 2014

Asa Watson should have been an all ACC TE, but we see how that worked out.

Had the opportunity to meet Asa at the Women's Football camp this summer. I was blown away with this young man. The players were asked what they wanted to do after college football. Asa, who is engaged, answered that he wanted to be a good husband and one day a good father. He was completely sincere. I also believe he is one of the players pictured in the photograph that went viral of the players who were eating lunch with the gentlemen in the wheel chair. The fact that he was chosen for this program does not surprise me in the least. Good work Asa!

Didn't know who you are until today Asa, but good work and congratulations on the recognition.
