I am satisfied with Coach Gottfried's first season results. As he brings in his recruits and transitions the team to his style of play, great things can and hopefully will happen. So far, as a first year coach at State, he has exceeded the expectations of most WolfPack fans.

This is the most excited I have been about NC State basketball since the early 80's.

    Go WolfPack!

    I agree 100%!!!!

I said when he was announced that there was nothing to dislike about the hire. He's done a good job. As long as he leaves the coeds alone, he could have a good career at State.

Thought I'd kick this back to the top.

Now on the cusp of the NCAA first round, and 2 weeks later, I think this guys a solid B+ / A. Would be nice for the program to have a 1st or 1st/2nd round wins to put a nice bow on the the first season.

Team is close... one more big man, and if Woods would actually move to get a shot....

We need players that can dance and we will start winning. No, but seriously we are one step and a few games from being in the top 4 teams in the ACC. A few more good players on the bench and we are a contender in the acc. After many years of waiting I hope I'm right! Go Pack!

Gottfried and the team need to analyze their game. There is no energy in the coach or team unless they are on a run. This team needs at least one person who believes in his team and will "NEVER GIVE UP".Coach if you have a player that can't handle losing then get that young man off the end of bench that really wants to play. PUT ME IN COACH

i agree. it will take time to wash off the stink of mediocrity and the "losing is acceptable" attitude within the players and the program. i experienced that in high school playing football on losing teams my last two years. after a while, losing becomes a foregone conclusion and everyone expects it. that mentality is isn't as easy to get rid of as people think.

It is obvious that the "feel" around NC State basketball is totally different this year than it was last year.....maybe it doesn't show up totally in the results, but there have been games where last year's team might have folded...this year's team didn't.

If you can't see the program with an upward trajectory, not just on the court this year, but in recruiting for next year, you are not looking very hard.

I hope he can help get Wood back on track. He's in a bad slump. Maybe he can also help Howell learn how to defend without commiting cheap fouls. Like I've said before, just give the man some time. I like what I see so far, except for not winning the close ones.

As this post confirms, always good to see the Tar Holes are still so obsessed and concerned with the exciting evolution of the Pack team under Gottfried, that they have to post some pre-emptive negativity and cast doubt. Swofford can try and remove the UNC rivalry game before we start kicking your btts again, but it will not matter.

How do that play like hoods? The one big difference I see is in CJ Leslie. He has matured alot since last year. Its clear that CJ has been the most consistent player. State hasnt beaten anybody, but i thinks the future look bright. Now coach can you get through to Scott Wood, and Richard Howell?

I appreciate the honest answer. You're right. The gift of higher education at any of the fine UNC system schools is a blessing that many other young people in other states do not get to enjoy.

If I had to assign a grade, I would give him a C. First year with the Pack and there turns out to be some growing pains. Team is a middle of the pack team in a weak ACC with a weak conference schedule. If it were not year #1, the grade would be a D.

Coach Gottfried has had a good year all in all. The team looks like a team and plays like a team a big improvement. With some depth and confidence the Pack will continue to move in the right direction. My hats off to Coach for his efforts this year. The season is not over and there is still a lot to play for. Go Pack!

Four in a row. This isn't cutting it. The season, meaning going to the NCAA's on the line, and four in a row. This drops Gott's results in my eyes. There will be an NIT run, but when the movitation needed to be there, it wasnt'.

Stop wasting your breath. Wolfies do not want to accept reality but prefer the dream world. It is obvious to anyone they would probably have 2-3 more losses at this point if they had not had the scheduling advantages you pointed out. I have done this several times and been met with derision and troll namecalling for just stating the truth of schedule. Again wolfpack fans act stoopid when it comes to anything detracting from Gottfireds success. It is like if he fails it makes them all look bad to have selected him...LMAO!! A bunch of foolz!

Glass is half full. When's the last time Pack Fans were optimistic about the future of Pack BBall? Gottfried's done one heck of a job in his first year, with another coach's players. Believe that the Pack can not only consistently enter NCAA Tourney in next couple of years, but can advance. The "stink" factor is that Syracuse and Pitt are gonna give all ACC teams a fit.

Nothing you wrote has anything to do with the relative difficulty of the ACC schedule for State this year vs last year. Almost any knucklehead can easily see that State has a very easy ACC conference schedule this year, playing twice four teams at the bottom of the conference while playing only UNC twice among teams in the upper half of the conference. The unbalanced ACC schedule does things like that. Last year it hurt State, this year it helped.

So take a pill, and try to keep up and stay on point.

This year's schedule weaker than last year??? You might want to start referencing facts before posting opinions.

One of the hits against Sid has always been his weak non-conference scheduling. Sid's strength of schedule last year ended at #60 only because of ACC teams. As of Dec 31, 2010, his schedule was ranked #92. Then after the 1st week in January 2011, State played #309 Delaware St, #310 Alabama A&M and #313 San Diego St and their strength of schedule dropped to #221.
    http://statsheet.com/mcb/teams/north-carolina-state/rank?season=2010-2011

One of the first steps Gott took in May was dropping some weak teams off Sid's 2011-12 schedule for the sole purpose of having the opportunity for an improved RPI. State's strength of schedule is currently #28 in the nation. As of Dec 31, 2011, their SOS was ranked #25 because Gott was able to bring teams such as Vandy and Texas. http://statsheet.com/mcb/teams/north-carolina-state/rank

Gott has Sid's recruits currently at #5 in the ACC vs the preseason prediction of #8 something Sid was not able to do. http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/101911aaa.html
Gott's 2012 recruiting class is ranked among the top 10 in the nation. Possibly top 5 depending upon Amile Jefferson's decision next month.
They are 2 wins shy of a 20 win season while playing the 28th toughest schedule in the nation. Doubt he will make the NCAA tourn. But,Gott wins 2 or 3 more and ends up #4 or #5 in ACC he will be in the running for ACC coach of the year.

Last year's schedule tougher?.......the only "placebo affect" here is the illusion you are trying to create.

Actually, several of us predicted more or less that very scenario, even that State might well do well at Duke. Still does not change my current assessment that most of the perceived differences with last year are placebo.

Many State fans need to go back and read about the games last year. While this year you have "hustle, effort" until the end of games, even when behind, and didn't give up like last year's train wreck of a team that somehow lost a lead in the final minutes. Really?! Yes, really.

  • masontom56 Feb 23, 2012

    Funny how success increases expectations.

IF, somebody had predicted the current Win/loss record in preseason along with the 1st half performance against Duke, everyone would say..."NO WAY"
