Gottfried's First Year Results

RE: Gottfried's First Year Results

The Sports Dump has a good preview on the McDonald's All American game and talks about State's incoming players next year. http://thesportsdump.com/2012/02/23/2012-mcdonalds-all-american-game-preview/

RE: Gottfried's First Year Results

if the change in team attitude and worth ethic is an indication of improvement, then yes, gottfried has made the program better.

would the team have been worse off this year if lowe stuck around? unequivocally yes...calvin would still be making horrendous decisions with the ball in his hand, howell would still be overweight, and harrow/brown wouldn't develop because lowe micromanages the play on the court.

Well TommyB finally shows his face after the final 3 loses in a row. At least they hope they can beat Clemson. ROFL!!! Hello....Tommy!

RE: Gottfried's First Year Results

Still a bit early to judge the year. So far, I mostly see a placebo affect. The State fans think the are better, though independent measures show little change from last year. Mostly, these fans don't remember last year very clearly, remember it worse than it was.

The difference in wins this year so far is due completely to differences in the schedules. Last year, State had one of the hardest ACC schedules; this year, the second easiest. That alone is worth 2-3 extra wins this year; 8 wins would be comparable to last year for ACC play. State has one more OOC win because it played one more OOC game against a weak opponent.

Individual matchups are a mix compared to last year, though W/L stayed mostly the same. State played better last year against Syracuse and both times against Carolina, this year against Duke. Overall, roughly the same. Individual players have matured and gotten better, some more than others. Problems with stupid fouls, leadership, composure, ... remain.

It doesn't matter really what I think is going on. It will depend on how State fans deal with the remaining games. Pre ACC play, I predicted State would likely have 8 or maybe 9 ACC wins, with 7 or 10 possible but unlikely. With three games remaining, that is still the case. The current losing "streak" is as much a schedule quirk as the earlier wins. If State goes 1-5 to end the regular season, will the fans see that as a meltdown? I don't know.

UNC70 hit in his first two paragraphs. I learned a few things in this one.

while wins is a very good indicator, it is not the be all end all metric for which "improvement" can be judged. there are no defining measurables for things such as heart, hustle, work ethic, team chemistry, belief in the system, grit, etc etc. if most of their opponents shot like ga tech did when they were beaten at rbc and their acc record right now was 2-11, i think it would be a little more acceptable if they were still playing with the same intensity. after all, state was picked to finish in the bottom of acc anyway.

i think we can all agree that this is not the same team as last year's train wreck.

howell's weight loss, however, is a definable metric lol

RE: Gottfried's First Year Results

I have read most of these tonight. The thing that has changed is discipline. Anyone can see this. They still have to work on this with some of these guys everyday in practice. Leslie has done much better as a result of a coach holding him in check. Wood doesn't have any defense. At one time his trey's were going. Not much lately. Wood doesn't hustle when he doesn't score. I have watched this several times.

But, Coach Gott still has State in a better position vs Sid's years. One thing that was accomplished under Sid was scheduling. They have played much stronger teams.

Al Bundy Creates Hoodlums

Cupcake schedule this year made the difference for any improvement in wins. Al Bundy has made the team worse as now they have the hoodlum mentality even worse and are giving the ACC a bad name and embarassment. And they cry about the "conspiracy theory"...ACC, Swofford, Out to get them. Celebrate hoodlum activity by having parades and pep ralleys for the ejected alumni! Pitiful....plumb pitiful. I hope they lose out the rest of the way for the season!!! Their atitudes are terrible!

Could you please explain this "hoodlum mentality" to me, if you don't mind?

RE: Gottfried's First Year Results

I agree that the jury may still be out when considering W-L records alone, but I posted on here before the season even started that they could have the exact same record this season as last, overall and ACC both, and if this year's team showed heart, hustle, desire, effort, intensity, and acted like they gave rat's fat rear whether or not they won, I'd be happy.

Leslie argues calls? So what - if he doesn't get a "T", keep it up. Shows me he cares and is fighting for his team. Was really impressed with him in the post-game interview on the radio after the Carolina game Tuesday night, he has matured by several steps from last year, in my opinion. That kid has completely busted his azz the last few games and the stats bear that out.

For my money, I'm happy with where they're at overall - before the season I would have taken 18-9, 7-6, tied for 5th with a chance at 4th in a heartbeat. Are there games and opportunities they failed to capitalize on this season? Yep, sure are. I think that's part of the learning process. Liking what I'm seeing so far, and I feel there's a good bit of basketball this team has yet to play this season.

Go Pack.
